The holidays are upon us. Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanza, Hannukah's over I think, but hope you enjoyed it or will enjoy whatever your particular end of the years/solstice ritual is with family, friends, and crew. Doing PM, tuning, deferred maintenance on motive power this week, so only a Car Shop Report. I built two PSC HOn3 UTLX narrowframe tank cars. I also built an old Classic Minatures Conoco CONX 5 tank car, but the decals crumbled with age, so no pics yet.

Happy Holidays, and really nice work Mike and Scotty! Here's a couple, I'm going to need a sunny day sometime soon. This is an OMI 55' Greenville Well flat, I should wrap some of it up. An Intermountain 4750 with HK decals. And a DW box.

My renumbered Genesis GP9. Added details include drainage pipe,GP9 plate, roof vent, and you can't see it but added the "always be carful" saying on the pilots, and trimmed the MU receptacles from two to one. Weathering was done with panpastels and air brush. Untitled by Timothy N. Alund, on Flickr

Happy Holidays, and really nice work Mike and Scotty! Here's a couple, I'm going to need a sunny day sometime soon. I really like your modeling. Weathering is just right and not over the top, and of course the freight cars suite my time frame of 70's and 80's. Awesome stuff! Doesn't hurt that I'm a Rio Grande fan since the early 80's when I was making trips through the Rockies although I've been slipping back a bit toward my roots of SP in northern California where I grew up. Always a pleasure to see your models!

I'm a life long fan and find the '70s to be a great time frame to model, lots of good locos and rolling stock and a wealth of info courtesy of the internet - There are some very talented and inspiring folks here, glad to be a part of it.

My personal contact with the D&RGW is pretty limited. I traveled through there with my cousins around 1975 and recall the D&RGW passing a camp ground where we stayed - I believe that was the Royal Gorge line where were passing through. Then around 1982/83 I took a couple of trips to Aspen to drive my sisters to music camp there during my college years. Of course I was trackside on portions of those trips, but like an idiot, I didn't stop and take pictures. I really regret not photographing the Rio Grande back then and just took it for granted.
Anyway, the Rio Grande and it's operating environment really made a lasting impression on me, which is why I decided to model it and have collected quite a bit of HO equipment for it now, most of it good matches for the real rolling stock or close stand-in's. But you've adapted some cars to make them more accurate and weathered them nicely! Great job! The scenes are nice too and an inspiration for me to emulate as I begin designing my small layout (10x18).
Cheers, Jim

Hey Jim,
I'll have a similar space ( one stall of a two stall garage) to work with, hopefully this coming year I'll get it going! I took a road trip with Railroad Photographer Blair Kooistra back in '83 ( We both lived in Bellevue, WA. at the time) and spent several days in Utah and Colorado. We waited for the RGZ in 105 degree heat East of Green River, UT only to have it show up with a GP40-2 on the point, caught it with 5771 climbing the Front Range a few days later tho. The Grande was putting on an impressive show at the time, we camped on the upper loop of the Gillully Horseshoe one night, you could hear eastbounds coming for miles, they often had helpers returning down the west side, lots of howling Dynamics and brake shoes rimmed with sparks as they went past - Pretty unforgettable!

I am familiar with Blair from magazine articles I've read over the years, probably 80's mainly. If only we had a time machine eh?

I'll have to see if I can scan a few slides from that trip.....I think there's a shot of a GP40 running long hood first shoving the Fast Ford up the East side of Soldier Summit. That was a pretty fun trip, wish I was about 24 again!
