Both east and westbound Milwaukee Road freights are seen meeting at "Tower CK" in Winona, Minnesota in this very incomplete scene from late 1968. The tower is scratch built to match the actual structure using styrene products but is far from complete. Much remains to be accomplished on this prototype based layout I'm slowly building. Tom, Great work, I really like the composition of that scene! Looking forward to seeing it develop. Lots of messing around with LEDs this week while building outdoor lighting. Managed to kludge together some parts into a fairly decent replication of an old-fashioned arc light, as well as number of other variations on outdoor lighting. At the engine house in Silverton, the crews like being able to see what they are doing when getting their locos ready early in the morning. A C-130 and F-4E were caught using the fair skies over the Four Corners for training purposes... I make no claims to authenticity of the markings on that F-4, it's what came in the kit and my stock of 1:144 aviation decals is pretty thin...

So we were out watching the local work through Joliet. Got a shot of him by the depot. We always admired the 'if it loads it leads' dog's breakfast of power that rolled 'over by dere'. However, according to my railfanning buddy: "The back of the train can be just as attractive as the part with the headlights, sometimes moreso." Hard to argue with him, and in our youth we became admirers of fine cabeese everywhere. He got some good shots of various RI versions that afternoon. He got the wide vision on the local. A spartan and clean bay window on the trailers, pulled by an F unit and A-B E units...I digress...we are admiring fine cabeese here! The surprise was a return of an Espee bay window that we filmed the day before rolling eastbound... The film from the previous day... Please enjoy. Have a good week. Don't forget to admire the fine cabeese you see...

Beautiful work guys! Here's a TTX bulkhead flat, another lumber car - it was typical for many eastbounds on the D&RGW to have a cut of lumber cars at the head end, the railroad preferred having the heavy loads up front. Pretty stock D&RGW gon.... and a Walthers RBL

Myself, I did not get a lot done this last week so I am going to dust of some models I did in the past that are some of my favorites. When they first came out I purchased 4 of the ExactRail Undecorated PS 4427 Covered Hopper Kits as I did not ever think that these cars would ever be done by ExactRail and so far they have not been. URL=http://s765.photobucket.com/user/dti406/media/ER%204427/Trains122311006.jpg.html] These are two of my Anderson's Grain Cars, which used to run past my house in Toledo from the Anderson's Elevator in Maumee to the River Terminal. Monfort Grain had a number of cars for hauling feed to their massive feed lots in Greely, CO, used to see these cars when traveling back and forth from Loveland to Toledo on vacations. CB&Q Kit car built by the CB&Q shops, just like the paint scheme and it fits in with some of my other Burlington Grain Hoppers. The Andersons cars were done with Herald King Decals and the Monfort and CB&Q cars with Oddballs Decals. Thanks for Looking! Rick J

I finished painting my kitbashed Frisco EV caboose this week: I'll have to try to get some better photos at the club layout. I'm looking forward to seeing it with the Frisco GP38-2 that just came in the mail.

I did forget I took a crack at weathering this week for the first time in some years of building new stuff. Picked up some of the Tamiya weathering kits and they seem to do a pretty good job for those who are artistically-challenged. Here's the result of my first "victim" going under the brush. Nothing like what others do here all the time, but I hope to be learning more as I go.

I'm weathering challenged but I do have decent results with some Floquil Engine Black brushed on the face of cars with solid bearings. When brushed the Floquil doesn't dry flat but almost semi-gloss which represents the oil and munge that coats the face of the wheel on a solid bearing car.
Jim, I don't believe you've heard of the Rio Grande's brief, experimental Chrome Sidewall marketing scheme...? Yeah, they are kind of awful. That's one place where the Tamiya system didn't stick, although the sideframes did OK. This was someone's early RTR car and for some marketing reason -- "Look ma, I've got metal wheels now!" -- they decided to apply those And I'm fresh out of now-unobtanium Jaybees. So they'll get done in the second pass. Sorry about the glare. I think the car needs some more shading in the panels in the orange. Maybe a little active rust in the lower down silver, too, which happens to be one of the colors in this week's upcoming purchase of Tamiya kit C with my 40% off HL coupon. Folks say the Tamiya stuff sticks pretty well, but I'm thinking a quick coat of matte might still be a good idea once I get it finished. What do others do on this?

Thanks for the compliments, but you guys put me to shame with the nice weathering and modeling. I really need to step it up. Here’s the prototype tower in 1978: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1742601Mine will have a decade less of neglect and peeled paint. …and another view: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=114372As requested, a couple more grab shots of the junction are attached. Here we have a C&NW westbound departing with bentonite empties up front: Here's the helicopter view of the junction showing the lay of the land: Regards, Tom Wencl More pics of that junction please! Looks awesome Matt

Made myself a wheel painting jig and sprayed that shiny chrome down to something more believable. Worked the powders over some more, then hit the whole thing with Dullcote. Looks a little more acceptable in polite company now I hope.
