What you're seeing is the outer protective coating. Once it's peeled off, the handrails (and stanchions) are the correct color and size. Ed

That is a ridiculous contrast.
I do see one upgrade that Kato has made though. The addition of windshield wipers. OK, two. Sunshades.

Well, it looks like we have to make due with what is currently available on the market for now, unless Genesis or someone tools up a new HQ GP35, which would be nice. KATO still seems our best option for now.

KATO still seems our best option for now. This is one of those RTR camp vs. Modeler camp opinions. As a modeler, the Kato model is pure gold. Brian

I would venture that the lettering is much more complete and sharper than earlier runs. Because they have the chassis, wish they would spring for the money to tool a GP30 body. Then I wouldn't have to adapt P2Ks.

Brian, there is a note in the Instruction sheet to modify the loco cradle if the cab shades are used when storing the loco. this just pertains to the bottom of the box,and shouldn't be too hard for most of us to do. maybe even easier than mounting the window sun shades ? Spikre

I want to thank everybody for all the comments- you give a lot to think about- at this point I don't have any Kato units but looks like I will have to break down and take the plunge- so when I get a chance and some spare change it looks like I may finally begin my lease fleet. Any more comments, are of course still welcome.

There seems to be no shortage of Athearn RTR N&W GP35's but they are all low nose, non-dynamic ex-Wabash models. Did Athearn ever do a high nose version of the NW's? I'm not an NW modeler (more GN, NP, Q) but who can resist second generation high nose power that was so familiar in the 70's? So I won't go to the effort of kitbashing and painting but I'd certainly buy one off the shelf to go with my handful of other NW high nose power.

No. I think they way the mold was designed it does not permit a hi nose version without an extensive, and expensive re-working.

The GP35s I need to model have, uh, "reduced details" on the long hood: drolsen.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1401472drolsen.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1401466The modular construction of the Kato hood will make these modifications much easier to modify, and I do away with the radiator fans (a shortcoming of the model) and only have to replace the dynamic brake fan. I'm hoping to start the first of these soon. I do want to mill the Kato frame to better replicate the real thing. I'll be looking to some of Brian's examples for that project. There were a lot of variations of this prototype kitbash, so I need to sit down and pick one to go with. The excellent Kato drive will be important for these units to operate smoothly while switching at slow speeds. Dave

I just sold a Kato shell and considered doing that with it. I almost think though to save some sanity I'd scratchbuild the long hood with a Cannon end and doors and the Kato DB blister instead of try to cut up and re-use any parts of the Kato shell.
