Some say we should turn out the lights on the hobby. I argue there is a light at the end of the tunnel... And it's often a great locomotive like a Blackstone C-19. This group of weathered C-19s was delayed by nearly a year when Blackstone sent them back for a do-over on the weathering. Hardly any complaints from the narrowgauge crowd, though. I suppose we're an overly patient bunch by some standards, but we'd rather have it right than right away. The big construction project of the week is nicely illustrated in this overhead shot, a lumber yard and coal dealer in Durango. I bashed it from a JV Models Austin Burg Lumber Co. kit. Here's a kitbash I just finished, it started life as an undec Atlas WV caboose. I raised the cupola, redid the cupola side windows, plugged both small windows on the body, and as you look at it from either side, moved the right window left one panel, and blanked the hole, and blanked both ends' left side windows. Installed Plano roofwalks and ladders, and painted with Tru-Color paint, Caboose Red and Cotton Belt Freight Car Red. yellow rail is Polly Scale Reefer Yellow, decals are from Microscale. Good work everyone, I am still recovering from the infection in my middle finger so no painting for a while yet. Although I can start doing some assembly work. Here are some old pictures of some of my favorite cars, 60' Auto Parts cars based on the old Robbins Rails/A-Line/Concor Greenville double plug door car. Removed the rivits, and scribed weld lines in the side to replicate a Thrall version of the car along with changing the wheelbase from 41' to 46', painted with Floquil Boxcar Red and lettered with Mark Vaughn's decals. Removed the rivits, scribed weld lines, deepened the side sills, and changed to wheelbase to replicate the ACF version of the car, painted with PRR red that I mixed and lettered with Mark Vaughn's decals. Car was stock except for lenghtening the wheelbase, painted with Floquil Jade Green and Black paint and lettered with Walther's Decals. Removed the plug doors and substituted sliding doors from Atlas along with the door tracks, also changed the wheel base from 41' to 46', painted with Scalecoat II Black and lettered with Mark Vaughn's decals. This car was used for paper service rather than auto parts. Stock Greenville car, painted with Floquil Boxcar Red and lettered with Mark Vaughn's decals. Stock Greenville car painted with Floquil Reading Green and lettered with John Alanaiva's decals. Car inspired by a Jim Six article in the NMRA Bulletin, new look NW after the Southern merger, an ex-Wabash car with the same modifications as the Wabash car above, lettered with a mix of Herald King and Mark Vaughn's decals. Very nice work today! Love the auto parts cars Rick, I've done several of the same using Mark Vaughn's decals, I'll dig them out sometime. I have a couple simple ones to share, very hectic schedule the past 10 days (my band keeps me busy playing the bass guitar) so, here's some oldies and one new one. Welcome, Bradley B&LE LLP2K box. This might be Con-Cor's edition of the Robins Rails car. An Atlas ACF car originally used in the GM pool. Here's a before and after pic of the LBF 50' Gunderson car I've working on. This is close to stock including paint, at the time I had hoped a little weathering and spraying the inside of the car would give it some life................As I said, it almost went out with the garbage a couple times. But, like some of us a good Sow's Ear is hard to resist, here it is after a new frame, and a lot of parts/new paint have been added, it's looking better, but still very "flat". And weathered with chalks to represent about 4-5 years of service, you can see it's quite a large car in comparison to the adjoining ones.

Those are cool cars and fairly unique among HO auto box cars. I have one of those from Concor in brown for Grant Trunk, same as the one above, and of course one of those Atlas double door box cars - which is a dead on match for a class ran by D&RGW.
Rio Grande had a class similar to the Concor car painted in Grande gold/silver but I think it was a slightly taller car.

Well this Sunday I had to say goodbye to an old friend. My layout, only 3 years old is getting the boot. I am moving to a larger home with about 2,000 square feet in the finished basement. But I am taking a large utility room in the basement that will still about double my track size. With that said, this layout even the benchwork is getting shut down and moved out. I'll salvage all buildings, switches, grade crossings signals and as much track as possible but the rest may turn into a nice bonfire. I am going to start anew with a new more reliable modular layout designed to move with me as I work on my next 10-12 years of Air Force life.
A little better after cleaning today and moving out about 75% of the train boxes:

I guess working on auto parts cars was the popular trend this past week!. Here are the two P2K kits I finished last week. The modifications were limited to replacing the wooden running boards with Branchline Apex walkways and added Kadee #58s and modern brake wheels (which still need to be painted). I got these kits off eBay for about $7 each, so I consider these “cheap” builds. Does anybody have a method for repairing scratches in finished models? These scratches where caused by the kit weights sliding around in the box during transit. The more Kadee couplers I add to cars, the less I like the appearance of their coupler boxes. They don’t look very prototypical and allow the couplers to sag, which leads to the couplers hanging too low. Rich, can you flip one of those cars on its side and snap a shot of the underside so we can see how you modified/moved the bolsters to lengthen the wheelbase? Those cars look great! TBird, your P2K car looks much better than mine does. Nice work! Great models and photos everyone. Thanks, Mark

Thats nice work on the Amfleet interior. I hope to do mine someday as well. I wish Walthers would have thought out the seat direction more so one could switch the seats to face the vestibule end. Amtrak switched to vestibule to the rear about 1995, so if you model anytime before that with the Phase II Amfleet IIs it's likely you'll have to cut the coach section out and turn it around so the seats face the bathrooms at the front.
