It's overprocessed, but makes a nice seasonal SPF opener as Halloween nears -- and was the major accomplishment of my week.
So what did I do? Something that's been bugging me for at least a decade has been the lack of a freight station in Silverton. There actually was no stand alone Rio Grande freight depot. LCL, express, and other such traffic was all handled at the passenger station AFAIK for the Rio Grande. The other 3 lines didn't have one either. But my somewhat busier Silverton needed one. So a small cramped space alongside the team track was long thought of as a prime location. I've stared at the space for a long time trying to design a building that wasn't too big, could serve to transfer freight between the lines by having at least two doors so the contents of cars from one line could be quickly transferred to the other, and could accommodate at least one truck bay.
The only problem was I just couldn't come up with something that served all those needs, fit the spot and looked like the Rio Grande built it. So a team track has been just a team track. Then it hit me what it could look like. This is the result.
The foundation built with a basswood structure, covered with JTT plastic cut stone sheeting, weathered with some Testor's CreateFX black acrylic wash. The walls are basswood, with individual battens applied (because I was fresh out of board & batten siding), front door and windows Grandt Line, and paint by Rust-Oleum The roof base was styrene to accommodate the flex introduced by the building narrowing and the iron sheet roof is by Paper Creek. Lighting is by one LED. Took me about 6 hours to build.
It can accommodate 3 cars at a time with the dock extension, which also helps with "drive-off" loads from flat cars. I intend to add a small crane to the outside dock at some point.
You can see how the building is shoe-horned in, but fits nicely and looks right in it's location.
I also added an overhead crane at the May Day Mine. It's the Walthers 933-3174 narrowed by about 6' to fit the location.
The car shop produced a prototype heavy duty flat to serve the logging and mining trade's need to move heavy stuff. It's an old MDC/Roundhouse 30' flat narrowed and converted to HOn3. Came out well and is testing well in service. I still need to figure out deck treatment, paint, and decals.
Hoping everyone else had a fun and productive week.
