Starting this Special Edition of Sunday Photo Fun a little early. Scotty sent me a great little car in the mail. While somewhat ancient and weathered looking -- it is, I presume, a Scotty creation -- it received a special Historical Equipment Exemption after the car shop foreman was revived. He took one look at those trucks and Talgo couplers and fainted dead away. Well, the weak ones always get thinned from the herd... Turns out its speed restriction and size makes this old Mantua car perfect as a mate to this locomotive crane, allowing a revenue flat car to be returned to service. And those trucks (metal wheels, too!) and Talgo couplers gave nary a problem, even with extensive backing up. Here it is in the MOW train, in the hole while three Tunnel Motors scream past in RUN 8, very slowly. In Durango, the scale provided a handy way to weigh the car, so that was done. Anyway, a neat little car Scotty shared with me. Thanks, Scotty! In other news, the Hotel Mears opened in Downtown Red Mountain.

Scotty, It's a wonderful feeling to find a neat little surprise like that in the mail. What a way to start the holiday season. It'll have a good home here, as well as being entirely useful, sorta like a tale from the grown-up version of the Isle of Sodor or whatever that kid-thing is about. I'll treasure it always

Things have been busy for me, but I finally got to turn some wheels yesterday. CSX 7815 and CSX 7580 pass through downtown Chattanooga as they approach their destination in Craven yard. Not long after 7815 passes, the scanner started squawking again as the most recent recent addition to the fleet, CSX 7496, calls his signal at 23rd Ave. Catching the highball at Alton Park, CSX 7496 and CSX 727 resumes their trip north. After passing Cravens yard CSX 7496 parallels the Tennessee River as it approaches K.O. In Cravens, CSX 7815 has been tied down and awaits it's next crew when CSX 7326 rolls by on the main. That's it for now. Enjoy, -Dave

This was covered hopper week again, and I got some more cars done that have been in the pipeline for a while. I have done a number of the Ann Arbor covered hoppers that were dedicated to the Yuma Sand Service, but the original batch of covered hoppers were painted like this one and were for the first part of their careers in dedicated service for the Dundee Cement Plant in Dundee, MI. Eastern Car Works kit with added brake airlines and A-line Sill Steps, painted with Scalecoat II Black and lettered with Champ Decals. The M&StL ordered some larger PS2 Covered Hoppers which are represented better by the old AHM/Concor car than the current Athearn/Walthers 2893CF cars. While most of the covered hoppers of this size were in soda ash or phospate service these cars were ordered for grain service and were stenciled as thus. I added airlines for the brake system, a Plano Roofwalk and A-line Sill Steps to the car, then painted it with Scalecoat II MofW Gray and lettered the car with Mark Vaughn Decals. Last is an ExactRail 4427CF PS2 Covered Hopper kit, painted with Floquil Rust Paint and lettered with Oddballs Decals. Thanks for looking! Rick J

Here's a couple things. I finally had the chance to get outside in clear (but windy cold) weather to shoot this past Friday. The first two of 5 upgraded Kato GP35s, I originally built these many years ago they've been handled a lot and I felt a little work would help them. I re did the nose headlights, cored all the fans and added Plano blades and grilles, rerail frogs and quite a bit weathering. Post '72 on the Rio Grande these engines were B units and that's what I'll use them as on my layout, so no operating lights etc. A Genesis F89 with a couple trailers - It was windy while I was shooting this and I had to wait awhile as the trailers were moving around a lot!

An oldie but goodie. With the recent posts about the old T&D tunnel motor shell, I had to find my old picture I took at the CCMRC back in 1986. It took awhile but I found it buried in a box. The slide is about completely shot, so please forgive the graininess. The T&D is the one in the middle. At the time, I thought it was the best looking engine on the club layout. It had a ton of extra details added to it. Ran real good too. To look back to what we had back then and how much we enjoyed running trains...all you youngun's out there today are just plain spoiled. The BN commuter E9Au. The scratch built fuel tank and trucks are now in black and ready to be reassembled.

Rick, You got that right. With the snow sticking here and 10 days until Thanksgiving, it warms the heart to see all that steam generating capacity.

I'm still playing with my new mill. I machined a new tank out of clear acrylic for my BLI E8 project. I milled the scallops off the bottom of the BLI tank and milled a recess in the bottom of the acrylic tank for them. The gaps in the motor cradle will eventually be filled with styrene.

A few more diesel railroading pics, just because I had a bunch this week. 5371 and friends roll through West Durango past the ASARCO mill and smelter Crew change at the station Some track reconfiguration in Durango Yard added capacity to accommodate cuts for standard length trains. Have a great week!

Mike, a couple of ideas for that ancient flat car: replace the trucks with Fox pressed steel trucks,or PSC Pressed Steel archbar trucks[think Walker has these ex-Westerfield truck kits now ?] use the trucks from the flat on an old caboose or passenger car. that floor was used under the 1860 box and stock cars. T-Bird, how about a Sherlock trailer to keep Holmes in line ? another nice bunch of pics this week !! Spikre

Spikre, I gave some thought to substituting more modern trucks, but they just work so well I'm going to leave it be. If it's an anachronism, at least it will be a complete anachronism. Talgo couplers, too. Those work so well I may drag out my few old AHM cars...nah. That floor is great, nice and heavy the old-fashioned "weigh." It also killed any thought of narrowing to convert to narrowgauge, just too much heavy cutting. I still have a couple more 30' MDC flats to narrow and they involve cutting down the frame, are a PITA, and I don't want to do all that cussing at this nice car. And there's no way I could do a presentable job of touching up Scotty's great weathering job if I dd the splits with this car. It may get some tool boxes, crane accessories (I'd love to have one of those "orange peel" buckets), etc in it's new life as a crane tender.

Rick J Jl, yes that's the same cliff where Ruby Falls is located. However, what you see in my pic is pre I-24. I know it's blasphemy to have yellow numbers, but that's the only way I can have Conrail units. Rick, beat up and dirty? That's how tomorrow moves. -Dave
