Looks like I am first this week, Managed to get some cars completed this week: This is a Thrall Clone of the ACF 1958CF Covered Hopper, used the Eastern Car Works kit and filled in the side holes, added airlines where appropriate and A-Line Sill Steps. Painted with Scalecoat II Black and lettered with Mark Vaughn's Decals. Intermountain Railway Company 12 Panel 10' Inside Height Boxcar Kit that was used by the Great Northern, this is the 5th car I have done and all five have different paint schemes. Car Painted with Floquiil Mixture of Jade Green and Burlington Northern Green to replicate the freshly painted Glacier Green. Lettered with Champ Decals. This car took a lot of research, in 1958 The NYC painted two cars with an experimental paint scheme. At the Canada Southern website it stated the car was a double door boxcar of one of the NYC lots, but in looking at the picture and caption in the NYC Color Guide it seems the NYC bought a 50' car from the C&O and instead of the Despatch Ends and Roof it had a 4/4 End and a Diagonal Panel Roof along with a single 8' Door. I used a Branchline 50' Fishbelly side car, substituted a 4/4 end from the scrapbox and built the rest of the car as normal. Painted the car with Floquil Conrail Blue and Scalecoat II Black then lettered with decals from Modern Rails. Two months after these cars were painted the Jade Green with Cigar Band Herald cars came out. Thanks for looking, Rick J

Time to take a brake from engines. Here's an interesting load I caught coming into Cravens yard. I call this car "How Tomorrow Moves". Enjoy, -Dave

Rick, That new camera is really doing your fine work justice. Dave, Great load with a story behind it. I spent a lot of quality time with track this week. The primary culprit -- a location on my Cascade Branch, which is written up in detail here: cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/219241.aspxBasically, it was reconfiguring a bridge approach/grade originally intended to act as an obstruction -- it just ended up a little too obstructive for several reasons, including a sharply rising local water table. Most of all, I didn't want to have to "charge through" a bad spot or two when the track suggested careful running. It's a 20" r curve on a 2%+ grade through a wye switch. The original New and improved It all started with the goal of adding an additional spur/industry location. I end up flipping the lead to the turntable 180 degrees. By using the old lead as the new industry location, it can be accessed across the TT without the need for an extra switch. Since I now had an extra switch kit available along with 3 sticks of flex track, I was able to push ahead with the logging branch to Camp 13. Having mostly removable scenery sped things up. Camp 13 is the highest elevation on the layout. It's at 69" above the floor. The low spot is the staging loop at Chama at 34". The first revenue runs were quickly made. Timber felled here is taken to the sawmill in Rockwood. Here's to a great holiday season for you and yours.

Really fun work here this week guys - Love the CSX load! As always Rick and Mike, great stuff. Good luck with upcoming move Jim, i think you'll find the west Coast to be a nice change of pace - you build fine models, no need to berate what is good work. I managed to weather another of my Genesis GP-9s, it's very refreshing to just get an engine dirty to finish it (other than some re-rail frogs I'll add later), these are really nice locos. Relieving pure black with some weathering brings up the detail, can't wait to shoot this one's pic out in the sun (it's due back here in Seattle about 6 months from now). I also managed to lightly weather the first of two Atlas McCloud River FMC 5077 boxcars using colored pencils and chalks. White cars seem to be very challenging to convincingly weather with overdoing it - these will represent fairly new cars (1977 built) on my layout and I don't want them to be rust buckets.

SNIP I've been told its quite sunny in Phoenix. Maybe I can actually take some outside shots. Its in the upper twenty's to low thirty's along with very overcast gray sky mixed with some sleet today in Wisconsin. Phoenix is partly cloudy and 65. Sigh.......can I move tomorrow......... Plus, I feel more SP and Santa Fe may be forthcoming from me!.....and unlike N.E. Wisconsin there is actually a lot of train movements! I have put a trip to Donner Pass back on my bucket list..... Oh yeah, you'll see a lot more of the sun in Phoenix. Smog and haze are more of an issue certain times of the year. We lived there in the early 60s. Last time I visited was in 1978, after my brother and an old buddy moved out there. Seemed a lot more like California them, but fortunately it's not. Don't forget you have the old, very busy SF and SP mains across AZ, both closer than Donner, but I wouldn't take it off the bucket list. That's one I want to see myself.

Well, it's been awhile since taking the time to save/post and share some of the stuff I have done, just been too busy. My friend models the GTW and I have been adding the details onto has caboose fleet for him, and weathering many of his cars. Last winter I stumbled across a photo on ebay of a center cupola caboose, and thought of him. When I latter looked at the cabbboses I had of his, I thought I could probably kitbash a couple of these from the WKW model, so I asked him about doing so. He gave me a couple to work with, and here is the first finished model, which I wrapped up and gave to him as early Christmas present on Thursday, when he hosted op session. Here it is weathered on his layout waiting to head out on local. He really liked it, and I am working on a second one, which will be slightly different (crossbars in windows, and different paint scheme. Regards and Happy Holidays Brian

These are available from the Cannon Shopping Cart. The others above soon, the ATSF and MILW soonest. Dave Here are links: SP CarGN CarThe SP model kit is only $18 and the GN is only $20. Available direct only according to the site. Jump 'em boys they are inexpensive, will give you something to actually build and paint, plus they are half what you'd pay for some of the RTR models of similar quality. Of note, what my kits offer are laser cut sides so these are NOT $18 & $20 cars. These are craftsman kits similar to what Modelers Choice offered. The SP car also includes my injection molded door, while for the GN car the basic door is laser cut but includes the Cannon plate C Ends. The kits need roofs, ends (for the SP) underframe, ladders, trucks, decals, etc. A parts list is in the shopping cart, for the various manufacturers parts (such as Moloco, Athearn, Accurail, Intermountain., some of which I have purchased in bulk and offer separately. Very cool car Dave! Any mods to the flat car for hauling damaged cars? Thanks, it was an Atlas flat that was made into a flush deck. CSX has a fleet of 89' flats for moving damaged cars, however I've seen them use random TTX cars to move damaged equipment too. I guess it's whatevers available when they need it. The hopper is a Athearn Genesis. It was dropped by another modeler and was given to a friend to see if he could fix it. It was too far gone so he was told to keep it. Since it was not his railroad or his era, he gave it to me since I wanted to do a wrecked car. -Dave

T-Bird fantastic job on weathering the Geep, and the Atlas double door cars. Dave, like the load up, shame someone lost a Genesis hopper to the floor, but it looks great as a load up en route to a repair shop. Mike, like the SP one spot, its a long detour from California. Brian nice work on the GTW cabooses. Mr. Pitts your UTLX 80000 series cars are always a pleasure to see.
Rick your narrative on the blue NYC box was very interesting, nice job.
Nice work everyone. Bill

It's been a fairly decent 2014. I must work on the layout more in 2015. I think I spent more time with a pan pastel weathering kit and a new camera than I did on the layout. Ah well. I'll get to it eventually... I had been looking forward to some layout time before a show yesterday. The day before, I received word that a friend's grandson was having trouble with his Thomas the Tank Engine set. They couldn't get Thomas to run much around the tree this year. Who ya gonna call? Me, of course. Master of all things HO, I guess. Now, before the reference to Sodor's most famous resident makes you tune out, hear me out. I relished the opportunity to help in this case. Maybe...just maybe...this kid might have a better experience with his kid stuff and have it lead to something. Maybe I can give a nudge in the right direction. You never know... So what was the cause of the problem? I disassembled Thomas and discovered oil everywhere under the shell. Cleaned all that out and lightly oiled the gearbox. Got it all back together and he ran smoother and quieter, but not good enough. He was having pickup issues, as many short wheelbase engines tend to have. CRC 2-26 to the rescue! All contact surfaces, and his drive rods were cleaned and lubricated. Now we're getting somewhere. He ran just fine on my ancient Tech II 2500 power pack. I decided to test the one that came with the set. Yessir, the Bachmann power supply was hosed up. Dead as a doornail. I picked up a new Model 1300 controller for cheap. That did the trick. Having gotten him to run properly, I had to give the boy a tour of the big time railroad. Here he is, happily bouncing on those Joliet diamonds that you have seen so often before (I think if we could do this in the cab of an RI E7, our face might look the same): Of course a meeting of the minds in Blue Island was in order. I give you a group photo: Now, my friend's grandson's Thomas would not run the big layout, as he is not DCC. I wanted to give him a real break in run after his '92-day inspection'. I un-retired an old Christmas layout I built before I knew what an internet was. It was all crappy track on old school scenery, plus it had seen better days. Ah, so what? This is supposed to be fun, so here is a shot of the boy on his branch line back home, or at least that's what this makes me think of... All I can say is, share your model railroading enthusiasm, and your sense of fun. This was not prototype railroading, but is was a fun little project. I hope Logan has fun with his train set. I was glad to help. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, and your friends and family! Thanks for being fellows in this hobby of ours!

Spikre, the NW-2 is the Kato. The radiator is just weathered to bring out the details. It was built by Kelley Duford.
As far as the eyes moving in Thomas, that was a neat find. When you disassemble the running gear from the motors and upper gears, you find a neat little clockwork that makes they eyes move as the gears drive the wheels. It actually is pretty cool.
I received a video on my Facebook page that shows Logan watching his Thomas roll flawlessly around the family Christmas tree. It made my weekend.

Better get Thomas out of Blue Island before one of those worn out GE's breaks down and needs replaced. My son LOVES Thomas. It's the only thing he'll watch. Unfortunately Netflix doesn't have a very fast turn around on episodes. I think I've seen "Misty Island Rescue" a dozen times.

John, Thomas was the second unit out when 280 shot craps. The hogger wanted him as the leader, but...no cab signals. The railfans wasted no time in venting their displeasure.
Hope you and your family have a great Christmas, especially your Son.

I finished this Evans 4780 up a couple months ago. It's SIRX 475068, ex Garvey Grain. I wanted to do a car that still had the Garvey lettering intact and wasn't completely nuked by rust, which is common for 4780s, so it took some searching to find a good proto-
www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=948004
www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=948004
The fresh from Exactrail car is a bright green, so some repainting with acrylic washs was needed to achieve the current more-olive color. The rust was done by using oils for the heavier areas, then using Bragdon powders for the rust "halos" that surround them. The "CHEK" tag was also done with acrylics then faded with a couple white washes.
I plan on starting on another Evans 4780, an orange NOKL ex Dodge City Co-op car after Christmas.
