I've been working on the railroad.... And there it is, the end of the line is finally reached on my Cascade Branch. An overall pic of Crater Lake's track. After a meet made possible at Camp 10 by a new siding there... The train pulls down to the bridge across Lime Creek Gulch.

I only got one car done this week, but here are a couple of views of it. The Illinois Terminal Railroad had two 60' Boxcars, they were assigned to the Amoco Oil Company refinery for the shipment of refined oil products. The ITC leased these cars from Evans, and there is no history on who the manufacturer was but the cars were very similar to the Greenville and Thrall cars of the period. Since I had a number of Robbins Rails Greenville cars in stock, I removed the plug doors down to the car sides and made a door out of Evergreen Sheet Plastic and then used Evergreen 1x3 strips to make the doors themselves along with the upper door track. In addition I changed the wheelbase from 41' to 46' to match the prototype. I added a Moloco Hydracushion Assembly to the frame and Plano Coupler Walkways over the Details West Etended Coupler Pockets. Painted the car with Scalecoat II Reefer Yellow along with Black for the underframe, then used Floquil Platinum Mist to represent the galvanized roof. Car was decaled with Mark Vaughn's decals for this car. (The other car did not have the slogan on it.) Rick J

I'm tardy this week! Here's what's on my desk right now, 3 more ACF's SP/SSW freight cars were pretty common on the Rio Grande, I was reviewing my covered hopper cars a couple months back ans realized I had no ACF's to speak of so these are welcome additions.

Those Cotton Belt hoppers look great. I had to have some for the same reason so I bought all 4 numbers offered by Atlas plus a couple offered by Intermountain.

Great work everybody. A few questions thou... 1. Bobby...How much did it cost you to rent the helicopter to fly over that tank car? Thought you could sneak a real one in on us, eh? 2. Malcolm... Which C&G caboose are you going to do? Are you using Louis Saillard's book for reference? 3. Traindude...who's GE demo is that? [2nd unit] Tower 55 or Intermountain?
Have a great week guys!!! JL Vancouver WA

I had so much fun with my first Accurail PS 4750 kit, I decided to try another one. Part of the reason I chose this car was to add some spotting features for UP's CH-100-29 class. The reinforcing angle along the top is the most obvious. I fabricated it by cutting the edges off some Evergreen styrene C-channel. The LHS didn't have angle stock of any kind, but the channel was easy enough to use. I rounded the outside corner with a sanding stick. I used more angle for the bracing UP had around the bottoms of the hopper bays (a detail omitted from Tangent's model). The arrangement of the brake gear doesn't match the UP prototypes (Tangent's car doesn't either). I left the air reservoir where it was (too low), but did relocate the horizontal bracket for the brake lever below it so it appeared in the correct relationship when looking through the end cage. Gates varied. I shortened the slides to approximate one common arrangement, a decision made for me because the plastic didn't fill the mold on one of the kit parts. As with my previous kit, I added wire grabs to the running boards since none are cast on. With the other modifications having been made, I also roughed in some piping including the train line. Stock couplers and wheelsets were replaced with Kadee and Intermountain components, respectively. ACI decals finished it off for now until I get around to weathering. It's no contest model (there are lots more small details I could add, which would have defeated the purpose of a cheap, quick build), but will do for op session use. Image from www.rr-fallenflags.org/up/up75216k.jpg . This view shows the B end arrangement and the extra bracing near the bottoms of the bays. This car also has the shorter slides. The shaker brackets look higher to me than on the model. The parts I added had to be positioned somewhat low to clear Accurail's cast-on details. By way of contrast, here's Tangent's car. The crossmember above the air reservoir shows up in silhouette, along with the lack of the above bracing. It's still superior overall to anything I intended to create with the Accurail kit.

I'm a little late to the party, but I got to turn some wheels today. Here's a little bit of the action I caught: CSXT 1135 gets cars ready to spot at local industries. I made some progress on my pipe train. It's about 80% done. Here's CSXT 8875 heading southbound approaching James (Ladds, TN) Enjoy, -Dave

Rick, That's an eye-catching car. I know, every time I went to order decals from Mark Vaughn's website I would pass by the picture of the car and wondered how I could build it. So I finally ordered the decal and started in on it as it is similar to a Reading Boxcar I built. Also finding a good picture of the car on the Fallen Flags Website was very helpful. Rick J

Lots of great photo's. Rob, nice job on the Accurail car. Maybe not contest quality but it looks great anyway and captures the main feature of the UP hopper! I'm going to have to hunt down a few Accurail cars if they aren't all sold out already.

Did a lil more work last night. Drilled out the styrene where i'll be using cannon % co. bug eye marker lights on the rear (trimmed flat). Drilled out the holes for the same cannon bug eye markers on the cab. The holes are now even, pic shows it before correction. Drilled out openings for DW roller bearings for my RCPE SD40's flexcoil trucks. Bearings added - Does anyone know the name of the company that makes the plastic bearings? Also finally got this in the mail the other day to use on the SD40. I have to wait for the planto roof hatch before I put this on.

Steve this is all good stuff and I for one do enjoy watching and learning from... but why don't you start a thread for this build and allow us all to follow it as a great build. Just a thought my friend.
