I have been procrastinating on building my Hot Coil Car, so I got to work on it again, finished a lot of little work and I get to move on to all the various grabs in the next steps. Installed the main airline and bent it sort of by the diagram but when you are looking at a diagram in two dimensions and bending in three dimensions it is a little daunting. On the next car I will not bend the airline until I get the support brackets installed which was on the next step after the bending, but in doing the assembly it makes more sense to bend to the support brackets. Here I have installed the remainder of the Walkway supports. Here are the airline support brackets and the final bends on the main airline, same at the other end of the car. Also installed the brackets that hold up the corner of the walkway support. Installed the Plano Walkways for this kit on the walkway support brackets. And, along with the Hot Coil Car, I finished the detail parts, installing the cut levers a real PITA and the horn and screening in the air intake and radiator sections. Also painted the body parts with Scalecoat II Brunswick Green. I will install and paint the trainphone antennas when everything is complete. Rick J

Is it that time of the week already? Time flies when you're model railroading. I've been posting pictures of my in-progress pipe train. It's now finished. It's 15 BLMA pipe flats with custom built pipe loads. Here's a overall look of the train, although it's hard to get a picture of the whole train, you get the idea. CSX 8707 and CSX 8952 slowing down to take the siding at James. At the end of the siding, creeping up to the signal for a meet. The local residents don't seem to notice. And a better look at 8707 Now that this project is done, it's off to the next one. Enjoy, -Dave

Rick, Those coils will be riding in style. Fantastic detail! Dan and Dave, Nice work there, too. Last week's pics drew some comments about the color balance in them. Brian came up with a link that worked in helping me adjust things. Not perfect, but definitely improved. I also dialed back the resolution so that Spikre can maybe see things better. Thanks everyone! The first pic is for James, who sent me a PM saying he wanted to see more coal, but also got more ballast The water tank and coaling platform are both scratchbuilt. I reinforced the bank next to the tie mill with Grandt log cribbing. Next to the quarry, I leveled ground for auxiliary buildings and to store raw stone blocks. Eventually aggregate loading bins will be built towards the back, while a supply warehouse will fit near the switch. We close with a pic of "Whitcomb" 10 headed to the mill at Rockwood .

Nice work so far on the hot coil car. For some motivation, here are a couple of pictures of one I did about 5-6 years ago. Thanks Dan, you did one of the NYC cars, the P&LE car I am doing has a different grab arrangement on it and there are some bends to make that are going to be interesting, good thing I invested in some more wire in case I screw up. Rick J I did one of those as well as an NS too. The P&LE went to a customer and the NS was sold at a train show when I brought it to show it to someone. The offer was too good to refuse. This is the only one I have left.

Very nice work guys! I'm a little late to the party, happily the weather was nice Thursday afternoon so I had the chance to shoot a few pics. Here's an Atlas tank car - weathered with some chalks and a bit of artist oil paint, alas, I'm no Bobby Pitts - great work on the 6 axle car! Something old, from a shot in Mainline Modeler, a Robin's Rails 60' Greenville modified to look like an ACF The trailing units of a "Pearlman Mallet"

Mark, Great as always!
I have a similar looking 60' GT box car from Robins Rails (Greenville). Did you alter the truck centers, - mine the trucks are closer to gether.
Also, how did you do the stepped MU box on the nose of the F7A? I've got 6 Stewart F7AB sets, while not as nice as the Genesis F's, are nice runners and I could dirty them up to show them near the end of their 4-stipe lives 1965 as seen in Rio Grande Odyssy part 1.
What is the make of the orange/silver box car?

Thanks, Bobby

Thanks Bobby! That's just the stock model, but things sure have gotten better when it comes to what you can buy off the shelf
Thanks, Jim
I did move the truck centers out on the ACF car, there was an article way back in an '80s RMC that shows how to do it - very simple tho. Scraping the rivets off and scribing the weld seams was a bit more work ( it's hard to believe I had the time!) Awhile back I posed the question about the nose MU and as it turns out it's available only in a super detail kit specifically for D&RGW Fs from Details West, it has the correct radio antenna, speed recorder etc. a nice upgrade for older Genesis too. The boxcar is a Kadee PS1, IIRC it's a 9' door car, I painted and decaled, very similar to the one in Jim Eager's RG freight cars book, one of 10 on the roster, used in GM parts servive to haul Chevy transmissions.

I remember the article - it involved cutting the under frame parts and flipping the section with the bolster around. The trick is measuring it correctly I think.
I used to be watching carefully for years for the detail parts for the D&RGW F units and then a few years back - I do remember a kit but don't recall the MU as part of it. Hmm..
It does look like a Kadee but you must have cut the bottom sill as stock Kadee don't have the cut out?

It's in that set of parts from DW, I did use some straight DA grabs and I made the toe creep from some spare stainless fret from Plano. The Kadee car is from their 6200 series - the sill is stock, I lowered the ladders and took off the roofwalk.

I got some more work done on my Russell Snowplow. The paints needed to be custom mixed to reflect the faded look of WC 300. I also spent some time cleaning up my workbench. It's hard to get much done when your feeling overwhelmed with the mess. Before: And the after:

Well it has been awhile. Just finished up one of my "cheaters". The first diesels on the AV were painted solid navy blue with white lettering. Take one Atlas "Washington Terminal" RS-1, remove lettering and apply AV lettering and wa-la...an AV RS-1. And with a Tsunami thrown in for good measure. Great work everyone...

I have my thread going with my Flexi-Flo bash, so here's a, surprise, surprise, tank car. I cast the ends and made most of the parts, including casting the trucks. Thanks, Bobby Are the buckeye trucks sprung and hinged? No, after all the work involved in casting them, that wasn't even an after thought. I had to make the masters, then four two part molds. Now, they're available in metal, and soon plastic. Regards, Bobby

Ah Mark, I found the 6200 KD box car. At first I was looking on their website and clicked on most of them and since all the examples I happened to enlarge had the slopping side sill, I thought all of them were that way.
Great looking model. From Jim Eagers book it looks like it's from a series of 10 PS-1 box cars 60500-60509, with Evans DF belt rails delivered in 1954.

Yep, that's it.
The total side panel count is different but otherwise the Kadee car works really well, the old spiral book "Rio Grande Car Plans" has a drawing of it as well. The decals are close, but not exact.

Assembled a Detail Associates SD60M triclops cab. What a p.o.s this thing is. The mold must've been tossed around alot. Their are parts that are warped, to thick or thin and tons of flashing. Was able to get it together eventually, but not after sanding the window opening to an appropriate angle to fit the nose top. Unreal. Its not done either. It was late and didn't feel like sanding or adding any tamiya putty at 2am. You can see how off some of the seams are.

?? Steve, wasn't this originally a Smokey Valley Cab Kit ? or was it RPP ? will see how You can correct the faults. doesn't Athearn or Proto make a 1 piece 3 window cab ? still one of the Ugliest EMD cabs ever outside of the Wieeene Mobile cabs on those FP59 units. Spikre

Spikre This one is a DA kit, but I have seen smokey valley kits from time to time. And I think its P2K that did the 3 window version, but i've never seen just a shell or cab go for cheap. This was $9 on ebay so i couldn't resist. Plus I have a SD60 that i bought years ago from Athearn that i dont need for my NYSW fleet so i figured i'de challenge myself to something again. LOL Im also going to de-high hood Norfolk Southern SD40-2 that i blacked out to represent NYSW 3020 which was used till about 5 years ago and just recently scrapped in Utica, NY. Since it doesn't exist anymore, i'm going to turn it into Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern 3421. I have a 88" cannon hood that i assembled not knowing that NJ Transits GP40 fleet have 81" noses. So its all assembled and even glued to a cannon cab. So its a pretty, almost zero cost build at this point. I'll use the messed decals from highball i got, i've already got the paint. So it should go pretty fast.

?? Steve, wasn't this originally a Smokey Valley Cab Kit ? or was it RPP ? It was initially sold by Canadian Prototype Replicas.* And is a Canadian prototype. I don't know who did the die work. That sample in the photo is certainly grim. *or a business name that is just about like that!

The RPP triclops cab is one piece and quite a bit thicker.

Christian, the Canadian Prototype Replica's cab had 4 windows, was a 1 Piece molding, and was gone before EMD produced any 3 window cabs around 1989. now and then there would be posts on Atlas looking for those cabs. the Cab was based on the GMDD cab,but could be modified to be close to the MLW/Bombairdier cabs on M420s,M630s,HR412s,and maybe even the HR616s.
