Sure thing, George. I've been waiting for this 3D printing thing to "get there" for HO scale models. It's okay for some things - structures like these do well - but not really ready for freight cars or locomotives just yet. There are some elements of these models that had to be scaled up to meet the minimum wall thickness, so even basic structures of this size aren't quite ready for this technology, at least for the material I've chosen. To elaborate further on printing materials, since these models will be used and stored in Texas, I had to go with a material that could withstand 118°F without deforming. That rules out Frosted Detail and Frosted Ultra Detail, which can be printed to much finer detail than the Strong & Flexible nylon I've chosen. The somewhat rough sandpapery finish of S&F nylon actually works out well to represent the stucco-esque texture of the prototype towers. Some elements of these models make the cut as far as Shapeways' automatic audit of the model is concerned but still may not render perfectly, such as the thin window frames. I'm prepared to replace those parts with styrene bits if they don't come out as I intend. I guess I could photoetch my own window frames, but that would be crazy!

started working on another model while I wait for parts for the sister engine. This one i've had for about 5 years or so. I had blacked out all the NS stuff and renumbered it to NYSW 3020 since that is how they left it. But they recently scrapped the prototype and well I needed another sd40-2. This one is to become RCPE 3421 Into the dip.............70% alcohol sucks(all i had) got 91% and changed out, instant results. Stripped of all the black paint I could get off, factory decals, my decals and paint and athearn highhood removed. Sitting next to sister engine RCPE 3480 Im going to be using the cannon and company 81" low nose, dash 2 cab and subbase that was originally going to be used for my NJ Transit GP40PH-2B build, but that is on hold till i can figure out what to do with the frame since its a tad to long. So again, having parts on hand for other stuff comes in handy. Once I add the new cannon cab/nose/base i'll glue down the factory athearn exhaust silencer that I removed from my bluebox tunnel motor project that was my sons but its motor crapped out. I'll also be adding cannon tread on this one. The straight SD40 the sander boxes on the hood ends get blocked with the cannon tread plate.
