I will very likely be ordering an A-B-B-A set of the UP GP9s just for fun (I saw a lot of GP9Bs in the Buffalo area on Pennsy and PC back in the day) and found this discussion very useful. Thought others might as well.
By the way, whatever happened to Spikre?

It seems like UP ran everything they had in any combination they wanted for a number of years. Other than early Conrail, I think you'd be hard pressed to match the diversity of motive power on the UP from the 1950s through the 1980s.

Correction: Since the new Athearn GP's are lettered "Dependable Transportation", they are no earlier than the introduction of that slogan: June 1959. On delivery in 1954, they had grey trucks and the Streamliners/All the West slogan. Maybe someday....... Ed Well, today's ALMOST the day. Athearn did the third version (Dependable) a couple of years ago. This time, they're doing the second version: as delivered by with "silver" trucks. This version seems to have lasted until at least 1960, so I'm in for a couple. Yet to be done is the as-delivered and the final (We Can Handle It). Both of which will also get my interest. Ed

Other than early Conrail, I think you'd be hard pressed to match the diversity of motive power on the UP from the 1950s through the 1980s. That might be stretching the period a little. Once the SD40-2s began appearing in the mid-70s, many of the 4-axle units were only found on branch and local runs, and rarely on the main.
