Blue Island near Chicago. Worth Railfanning?

Read about this place over the years.
Looks interesting. Does anybody have any recent experience there about it?

Any tips would be appreciated.

The text states that safety is okay. As a person who used to have family living in Blue Island and lived in southern and southwestern suburbs for over 30 years.....I'd keep my guard up, especially if you are alone.

I've been told by others that you want to be careful where you park. The railroads especially CN are not too friendly.

I never had any problems and i go there all the time by my self ..most of the time i am on my bike. the suns is the hard part to get right....best in late afternoon ... just don't go wandering around as the tower guy can be moody.

I was out there a couple years ago, and we only saw one train (as we got there). We hung around for 30 min. or so, and saw nothing else. It is a very interesting place with the bridges and diamonds, etc., but was kind of quiet that day.

We had much more action in Dolton. At the intersection of Park Ave. and Lincoln Ave. there's the Dolton Public Library and across the street is the town hall, IIRC. A local railfan we met there said as long as you stay on the pavement at the town hall, you're okay from the railroad cops. But if they see you on the grass near the tracks (and especially near the diamonds), they'll arrest you for trespassing. However, there were far more trains at Dolton for us that day than at Blue Island.

I have not been hassled but I stay off the tracks etc usually.
