The Spongebob Squarecabs are up for pre-order and the photos of the units look great! I really hated the look of the prototype when I first saw it (like the SD70ACE), but these are ugly in a good way and the ScaleTrains execution looks spot on. I do not do modern stuff overall, but these have grown on me and I want one.

The photos of all of these on scale trains page looks like the real things! I especially like the Santa Fe's in front of the old San Bernardino shops!

I just saw one leading an ET44AH while stopped at a rail crossing yesterday and like the fact that CSX decided to upgrade the SD-40-2's in their fleet.
I also see GP-38-3's and GP-40-3's on locals and mainline service as well as a few SD-50-3's.
The "spartan look" of the cab doesn't bother me one bit.
I hope the models are very successful for Scale Trains and commend them for choosing this locomotive.
A pair of those SD 40-3's pulling a mixed freight would look great on any modern eastern layout.

I was talking with a friend of mine who happens to be a CSX engineer, giving him a hard time that he can finally model one of his rides. To put thing in perspective, he models steam, mostly in HO and On30. He loves the SD40-3. Right now, he has been using one for the last month or so to switch out a large auto plant near where I live. I have also seen them on everything from MOW trains to being mixed in with modern GEVO's here around Nashville, TN.
Looking at the photos of the four releases, I see a lot less of the complaints that were directed about the first run. The mold release lines are less prominent, details aren't broken, and the paint is more neatly applied.

I certainly do not have a need for any CSX engines but those SD40-3 engines look dammn good. I am patiently waiting for the ET44AC engines though.

Hello group, This looks to be another nicely detailed model from ScaleTrains. For more info on the prototype and close-up photos to compare the model to, check out this link: SD40-3: CSX OLD Thanks, Mark J.

I thought the picture was of the real engine. I did to until I seen the coupler spring.. Some day coupler knuckle springs will become a museum piece. Surely there is a more practical way to make automatic uncoupling work without springs on the knuckle.

The springs aren't there for "automatic uncoupling", they're there for "automatic COUPLING". Which the above pictured items will also do. Ed

Ed Ed, Actually the springs are also needed so the coupler will open over a magnet. I still use magnets and not a round bamboo stick for uncoupling and a magnet test is one of my three step inspection for reliability. The first two is checking the coupler and trip pin height...

Ed, Actually the springs are also needed so the coupler will open over a magnet. Then try taking the springs out and see if the couplers will open over a magnet. I just did, and they uncoupled just fine. Without the springs. Ed

Ed, Bachmann used plastic instead of springs in their EZ Mate couplers (mark I). They didn't work so well.

The CSX handrails look like they are painted. Just looked at the SANTA Fe engines and the handrails are yellow, unpainted plastic. Hopefully, that's merely a pre-production thing and will be painted on final production.

Looks like colored plastic on the ends, painted on the sides.

I thought the picture was of the real engine. Now that a "Genesis Quality" Santa Fe SD40-2 has been announced, are you you going to pony up for the dozen you said you were going to get when you posted as ATSFAN?

I have an Intermountain ET44AH on order but it's not out yet so my guess is the model Scale Trains has said they will announce next...never produced in brass or plastic...will be the ET 44 AH/AC.
Plus...there will be numerous variations and currently several railroads use them or have them ordered.

Allow me to be the first to say "Yuck"!!! It's ugly crap like these abortions that have pretty much ended my interest in modern railroading. Nice model, though, I'll give Scale Trains that.
