Guys curiios! The listed price is that firm or can you e mail seller and try make a deal ?. Always paid the sellers price on a buy it now. I have no problems paying asking price but wonderd if anyone would ask for a lower price on 240.00 item................say 10 or 15 bucks off which would i guess cover postage. Any thoughts Steve................i guess there maybe rules!

Do you mean eBay? If so, you can't contact a seller to negotiate a different price. It's stated in their rules. They can ban you from eBay for that. They don't want people "cutting in" to their profits, which are based on the selling price.
I've also had sellers offer "other items" after an eBay sale over eBay's "email system" and I refuse. They say they watch for things like that, and I believe them! Now "off-channel" what can they do.

Steve,I have contacted several sellers over the years and ask for a better price..
Recently I contacted the seller and asked what's the best he can do on the price of a ER boxcar? He said he will offer a better deal if I wanted to buy 3 ER boxcars then the lot price would be $65.00 plus shipping-I bought the cars and they arrived 5 days later by USPS..I'm happy with the price seeing these are the waffle boxcars.
As a word of caution..I was told by one seller what I was tempting was against the rules since he didn't have "or make offer" in his listing.
It was his lost not mine.

EBay is also doing the best it can to stop off-network correspondence:
- Not releasing e-mail addresses - Blocking view of member ids most of the time - Requiring use of their messaging system if you want full buyer/seller protection
You'll conform, and you'll like it... well, at least they can't make you like it... yet...

If you want to do something outside of the buy it now, the only good way is to contact the seller off line, which assumes they have an email listed somewhere on their website etc. Going through the ebay contact system "may" work, but may also cause you some issues. For example I saw a guy selling golf clubs and his store was shown. I looked up his store and called it, and worked out a deal on a partial set for what I thought was a good deal. He was probably happy since ebay didn't take it's massive fees out of the price I paid. Of course I was outside of the ebay "protection" but it worked out fine. You can tell by the guys feedback and or the website and the company if he will be a rip off artist.
Basically ebay is now an online store, more like Amazon, than what it started out as.

As explained to me by an e-Bay rep, E-BAY SEES EVERY TRANSACTION, MESSAGE AND KEYSTROKE OF EVERY MEMBER WHEN THEY ARE ON THEIR SITE. THEY ALSO HAVE THE ABILITY TO LOOK FOR AND DISCOVER MESSAGES THAT ARE AN EFFORT TO CIRCUMVENT THE E-BAY SYSTEM OR TRANSACTION.. What does this mean? If a buyer tries to extort....I mean negotiate..... a better price from a seller, buy claiming damage, etc. without offering proof. The seller can turn the buyer into e-Bay who can read EVERY word of the messages. If a buyer attempts to negotiate, haggle, etc. a lower price from a seller, the seller can not only refuse the buyer's "offer" but can alert e-Bay, thus subjecting the buyer to possible disciplinary action. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ANONYMOUS OR PRIVATE IN MESSAGES OR TRANSACTIONS BETWEEN MEMBERS. E-BAY HAS EVERY MESSAGE SAVED AND ACCESS IT AND READ IT AT ANYTIME. THEY CAN ALSO ACCESS PAYPAL RECORDS AND CHECK UP ON WHAT YOU ARE DOING..... Big Brother is watching.......

Ebay forced you to use their messaging service via the their website and they track/spy on everything. That is why I said to go OUTSIDE of ebay if you can find the seller.

It's their playground and their rules. And there's really nothing new about how they feel about you trying to circumvent their system.
You can avoid fees by trading outside of ebay using groups such as: Backshop@yahoogroups.com Modeltrainswap@yahoogroups.com Model_Railroad_Sales@yahoogroups.com

Most of the time it works. If it doesn't no big deal. Sort of like the dating world. She won't say yes if you don't ask.......to go out with.......

There are a number of would-be "buyers" on Ebay who have contacted me and have made quite ridiculous lower offers (when I did not use "or best offer").
In any case--yes--Ebay does monitor every keystroke, but what that really means is they only have enough people to check when there is an actual problem or complaint. People can and still do use Ebay's own contact system to solicit and complete transactions that are "outside" of Ebay. It's only slightly more difficult now...
The dealers don't care, because completing transactions outside Ebay only allows them to make more money.
