He was 16 years old in the 2012 news article, so he is now 21. Has no track record other than a member of a Model Railroad club. Now, most of the producers in the model railroad business are well established long running business's or if new entrant's, they have come from established companies and had the connections to start their own companies. In looking at Jason's video's of his "China" production, it would seem to require hundred's of thousands of dollars just to get your feet in the door. Otherwise you go to an established producer and try to get them to let you piggyback on their production schedule. And the number of required units to be produced at any production run would cost in the multiple thousands. Just my take on thing's as they currently stand. Hence the reason for the pre-pay - pre-order. He's going to attempt to use *your* monies to fund the project. Bad business model. Very bad. Just ask the former CMT Hobbies how that worked out. Also, if he simply thinks he's going to simply have a Chinese manufacturer create one with ZERO oversight, he's got a big surprise coming his way.

Craig Martyn founded BLMA when he was 15.

Yes but did Craig ask his (potential) customers to pay in advance in the hopes that maybe someday they might receive product? I'm all for new companies entering the market and I hope they succeed. Starting small like Craig did and growing incrementally might seem old fashioned but it's a much better way to convince potential customers that you're legit and have the resources to deliver increasingly complex models.

Craig Martyn founded BLMA when he was 15. True. However, he did a lot of research, and asked for a lot of advice before he took the plunge.

As I recall, Craig started out with little detail stuff like air conditioners a concrete barriers and the like.
Then he did the signals. WOW!
Then he started with a some freight cars: trailer flats, reefers....... Of which I recall not complaints.
He did not start with a locomotive.
That said, this could be the guy who can. And does.
I am in the perhaps enviable position of not needing an SW1001. Lucky for me he didn't start with an NW5.

To manufacture a Locomotive, you would need either some sort of finance deal with the factory and/or at least $250,000 in cash on hand. Your average run is going to be 2000 - 3000 units.
The factory is not going to cut 1 molecule of metal until you pay 50% down on the project. Of course, since you are the "small fish", your project is going to be put-aside for larger customers unless you are there to "help" them physically & keep them focused. If you think for one minute that you are going to sit in-front of a keyboard as a newbie & try to manage a project half-way around the planet, you are insane.
So, Do you think as a newbie manufacturer that you can move 2000-3000 SW-101s based on people willing to pre-pay 100% & wait patiently? Let's say you pre-sell 500 units - enough to cut the tool. You pay your manufacturer the 50% & they cut. Now you have to come-up with the other 50% before they will shoot plastic, assemble, & ship. So if you don't make the other 50% your screwed because you just spent other people's monies to get the tooling done but now you don't have enough to manufacture. After so long of waiting, people are going to because impatient & start asking for their money back which you don't have because their money is sitting on a machine shop floor half-way around the planet waiting for you to come up with the rest of the cash to shoot the plastic.
This is a very realistic scenario & a good lesson in why you don't ask for a pre-payment to fund your project.

Guess he wasn't getting enough interest. Now he has some plan where you pay 50% now and 50% when the production model shows up.
Lol.

Sounds like they have had a rethink cedarvalleyscalemodels.comAFTER THINKING IT OVER, WE HAVE DECIDED THAT WITH THE YOUTH OF OUR COMPANY HOLDING US BACK, WE FEEL IT BEST TO NOT CONTINUE WITH OUR EFFORTS. AS A TWO MAN CREW WHO ALSO WORK A 9 TO 5, WE ARE UNABLE TO MEET THE GOALS THAT WE STRIVE FOR HERE AT CEDAR VALLEY SCALE MODELS. AS A RESULT WE TILL BE CLOSING DOWN OUR BUSINESS BY THE END OF OCTOBER AND ALL ORDER WILL BE REFUNDED. WE THANK THOSE OF YOU WHO BELIEVED IN US FORM THE BEGINNING AND HOPE THAT WE CAN COME BACK IN THE FUTURE.

Added to the Vaporware Hall of Fame. Nothing personal where Cedar Valley is concerned, but I'd rather see the SW1001 done by an established manufacturer anyhow.

The scary part, if that's what you want to call it, it looks like they actually received preorders. Very Trusting people out there.
