It has been a while coming...but, here is a video of popping open a Walthers passenger car.
This twisting method has been attributed to me over the years, but, it was shown to me about 9 years ago by an anonymous person who was shopping at Des Plaines Hobbies.
I have opened several hundred cars this way ...only the new El Capitan cars use a different method and we have a video of that posted as well.

Good and helpful videos. Well made.
Re: The first video
Just two suggestions to help avoid breaking tabs in most cases.........
1. Twist the body more slowly and not as far as the gentlemen did. Takes just a little bit longer to pop the roof.
2. Do not use a metal screwdriver to push in the tabs on the opposite side or even the side that pops up. The metal blade can crack those tabs (yes, ask me how I know ). Instead use a plastic or wooden instrument with a flat, blunt edge.
Below, next to the E-unit shell, is the tool that I use to gently push any of the tabs that may still be holding on. It's made of a semi-rigid plastic and it works well. As you can see, one end is flat.
Funny thing is that I actually don't know what it is nor do I remember where I got it from! Perhaps one of you here can identify it. Over the years, I've developed the habit of taking small items that people toss out or give away that wind up being useful tools or scenery items in this hobby.

Tony, How do you remove the windows from the Walthers cars? I want to tint them. Is your method of tinting them with Alclad on this forum? I remember it from the old Atlas forum.

Hi Eddie,
Re: Windows. Once you remove the roof, in most cases the windows pop out easily with your fingernail. Just be careful as on some cars you might have tiny dabs of glue holding them in place. If so, just gently pry with the flat edge of a tool. -----------
Re: Alclad
I've been holding back from posting a thread as I wanted to finish the units I'm working on. But I'll go ahead and soon post a thread with info and photos, including window tinting, that I shared on the old Atlas forum.

Very interesting videos. I am giving thought to enhancing the the interiors on some of my El Cap cars. Can anybody post a video or stills of this process that includes the "lighted" cars? Is the process the same or are there additional steps and/or cautions that are required? Thanks in advance. Jim

Jim Jim The process for the HI Level cars is the same since the lighting board plugs into the lower section of the car and should just lift off. I don't have the lighting in my cars but all of my cars have the plug in sockets for the light module. Just take it easy and open the cars up according to the instructions. I believe you will get the idea after the first car is opened. Maybe Keith can give any special instructions with the lights already installed. By the way, I started to purchase riders for my cars and I now believe it would have cost less to buy the premium version as you did compared to the cost of adding riders and lighting. Larry

Here is the El Capitan video..... Produced by my friend Ken Johnson of Trak Works Keith Turley The Original Whistle Stop Pasadena, California Keith Thanks for the video. I took the first one apart several months ago by looking at the exploded view, but you video does help as I did not pull the sides or top level interior at that time. One thing about the transition car from Hi Level to lower level, those ends can be switched if I remember correctly so that detail should be marked on the transition car so it is applied to the correct end. I have not heard anything about the kits for the cars. Are they close to production? In the meantime, I posted some pictures on the photobucket below of the 844 trip over Donner both east and west.
