Does anyone remember what year the Proto 1000 F3's and Highliner kits were first produced? I'm trying to remember which came first.

John - From a past discussion on the Diesel Modelers List, the Highlighers B-unit shell kit was first released in 1988. It was another 13 years before the A-unit was released (in partnership with Athearn) in 2001. Apparently Paul had some problems with the mold for the A-unit cracking a couple times, which delayed the release. I believe the Proto1000 F was released in the late '90s, so well after the Highliners B-unit but before the A-unit. Andy H or someone can probably provide an exact year for the P1K model.

Thanks Dave. I should have specified I was asking about the Highliner A. I knew the B was out years before, but never knew why the A was delayed.

Not sure about the Proto 1000, but it was in between the time the Intermountain F shell kit was released and the first Genesis and Highliner, because in that time span I built an N&W F7 using the IM shell and P1K drive.
The first Genesis F unit was released ahead of the Highliners kit. Samples were being sent out and several attendees at the 2001 Cocoa Beach meet (held first week of January) had the first run PRR units.
The Highliners F unit kit shipped in production on April 21, 2001. I have some pretty good evidence of this.. more than just memory :-)

I did a Google search and found an old thread in TrainOrders talking about the Proto 1000 F3 dated in mid 2000.
I'd forgotten how old the Intermountain F7 shell kit was until Andy mentioned he'd used a IM kit and a P1K drive.
If my memory serves me correctly, Intermountain released their F7 shells before they had their Regal Line drive available.

Thanks guys. I'm trying to date an ABA set of CB&Q passenger F3's I built. It must have been right around 2000 then. I know the Intermountain shells were out since I stole the nose doors and passenger pilots from a couple kits I had. Hard to believe that was 12 years ago.

Proto 1000 came after the IM F units. The highliner A units came first. Athearn Genesis based on highliners came after the IM F units and about the same time at the Proto 1000 F unit.

The earliest announced Genesis F units I could find on Athearns website is a batch of roadnames for the F3 in April of 2001, which means they should've hit the street around September-October of that year. Just guessing mind you, but that was usually the time frame back then of when stuff was announced, compared to when it came out.

That is correct about the Intermountain shells being out and available before the drive. I purchased and built one of the first shells which had some problems with the steps, at least for me. Larry

Yes the IM shells came first, without drives. Lots of issues finishing these to be perfect though........

You are right about issues with the IM shells, at least the one I purchased which was almost immediately after they were available. I built several of the Highliner B units which were easy to complete and looked very nice. The IM A unit kit was not so great. Larry.

Intermountain had a bigger jump on the competition than I thought.
