It's hard to follow Bobby and his fantastic stuff! I picked up these two Hi-Tech Details kits at a show last year, got them both for $5. I assembled the flat kits, added Kato trucks, Plano coupler levers, A-Line Stirrups, underframe details. I have less than $10 in each car. In fact, I sold my Tangent Mini HyCubes because I wasn't real impressed with the assembly. With these, I only have myself to blame! I just enjoy building kits.

Christian, Very nice job on that building. Is the Wright Brothers Bicycle Shop still available? it would be a perfect fit for my layout. I looked all over and could not find it, even on the "newer" Walthers site. I can never find anything on there! Excellent job!

Work and band related trips have kept me from posting the past couple weeks, here's some projects, some finished some not! Most of my home road mineral service 4427s all weathered up. I picked up a couple of Red Caboose RMDX 57'Reefers for $15 apiece at a local swap meet so this is the beginning of a short, 4 car project, this first one is basically unmodified, the next 3 will get cut down ladders and have their roof walks removed, here I'm toning the orange down a little with some acrylic orange wash Not the best photo, but here it's had some colored pencils and chalks added to bring up the rivets and ribs some. Some progress shots of an Atlas cylindrical that is being upgraded with a Plano walkway and some added detail on the ends which included shaving off a few grabs, adding a cut bar and replacing the Atlas truck with the correct 100 ton Genesis ones. I primered the Plane parts with Testors Glosscote and then mixed some TCP to match the car's Red Oxide color. Here I'm attaching the roofwalk with some Walther Goo that's been thinned with automotive lacquer. Pretty much done here, time to weather it!

Nice job everyone.
Mark, that Atlas cylindrical roof walk looks so light and airy now. Wow. I used to work with drillers in my former life as a geologist so that is a particularly interesting paint scheme. It was environmental test wells, not petroleum, but they used drilling mud too.
Of course the D&RGW 4427's are most excellent!

Bobby just another superb tank car.
Chuck love those box cars. The cut bars and brake rigging is fantastic
Christian that is a fine building. The blanked old large arch windows is so common in the real world and not much seen in model form. The small replacement window where a much larger window was is so realistic.
T-Bird those are nice hoppers. The mechanical reefer is great and the affixing of the etched Plano roof to the Atlas car is a good tutorial.

The "new" site doesn't list out of production models so I can't verify that. AHM/IHC brought it to market along with a couple other historical buildings from Deerfield Village. That was a long long time ago. My Walthers version sat on a shelf for a very long time so I's imagine it's long gone.

NY Cross Harbor 21 and 58. 58 is painted and ready for the final work, 21 is just about ready for paint. I printed the decal sheet on paper just to double check them before I green lighted it. Grand Rapid Eastern 2104, about 50% done with decal work and touchup. I never, ever want to do a G&W engine again.

Here is the Athearn [R-T-R] 65' mill gon that I picked up at a local train show last weekend. I did replace the couplers and trucks, added cut-levers and air hoses to the ends, updated the lettering (added the missing AAR code on one side, changed the reweigh dates, and added the COTS panels, ACI plates, and wheel inspection dots), and then weathered it so it matched the photos that dated from the 1980's in the L&N Color Guide. L&N 26209 by James Bilbrey, on Flickr When I find the time, I would like to take the L-L girder load and replace the "wood" parts with real wood and build a load matching the AAR loading diagram.

So much good work here this Sunday! This is not a Burlington Northern locomotive: It will soon be stripped and further modified to become NW 8501, an early C36-7 converted from standard range to extended range dynamic braking. The prototype cab and dynamic section are cut in. I'm keeping the cab but the dynamic section needed some revisions, so I'm waiting on a replacement for it. The clasp type sideframes are installed and ready for paint. I'm also waiting on a new radiator section to cut into the area under the radiator wings. I went into quite a bit of detail on the development of the cab and the sideframes on my blog: fr8kar.blogspot.com/2018/02/ge-universal-seriesdash-7-series-cab.htmlfr8kar.blogspot.com/2018/02/norfolk-westerns-triple-clasp-ges.html

Fantastic Tamper!
What glue did you use to assemble it? Same with paint, what kind?

With all the rain we've had I had time to finish up the Mark IV tamper I've been working on. Its basically a stock Custom Finishing kit with some lights and a beacon added. Those Custom Finishing track machines can be "interesting" to construct. But they can result in GREAT models as your work demonstrates.

Christian,
I really like that building - something like that would fit in nicely on a 1970's layout with some minor changes; I can't remember of Subway was around back then.
Mark has convinced me to beef up my mineral hoppers roster. I only had 2 of the P2K 4427 hoppers; one a kit I built many years ago and another kit waiting to be built - I've started building now. I found an RTR version I picked up and may hunt down another in either kit form or RTR (lots of D&RGW P2K kits floating around). I don't have any of the ExactRail D&RGW 4427's yet to replace the Walthers cars, but will shop some when ER has another sale on the 4427 hoppers.

Back in the day. Here are a couple of old Athearn locomotives that were done around 1980. These were my first attempt at custom painting and detailing locomotives. These ere done for a friend of mine who unfortunately passed away before his layout was completed, The Gallatin Canyon & Western. He had custom decals made for his railroad and we came up with this paint scheme. Both locomotives were remotored with NWSL can motors. They run almost as well as my Atlas RS units with the Kato drive. Thay also run at almost the same exact speed as the Atlas units so the can be used in MU. (Yes, I still run DC only at home) A big thing back then was constant lighting, something that is pretty well taken for granted today. I build my own diode bridges for just a few cents each. The lighting is also directional. Notice the class lights on the F-7. Lit these by using fiber optics. Although that are older than dirt, they still glide silently and smoothly around the layout.

We are both fans of the Northern Pacific and my friend wanted to have the locomotives have a resemblance to the NP. Both started off as undecorated units.

In fact, I sold my Tangent Mini HyCubes because I wasn't real impressed with the assembly. I've never seen anyone fault Tangent cars. What was wrong with yours? I had two ICG's. Both had ladders that were not glued on correctly. The end ladders especially. They were real close to the body on the top and the bottom stuck real far out. They looked like ski slopes. There was also a little glue smudge on one side. I got them both from MBK, so they were new. They just weren't worth the money to me. I'll stick to rolling my own...more fun anyway!

Fun is good, but if the quality was lacking, I'm sure David at Tangent would have made it right. Just sayin...

Jim,
Plano has a rebuild kit for the ends of the Walthers car in addition to the roofwalk - Digging around in my collection I found one more D&RGW car and am going to go ahead and rebuild it using the Plano components - There's some shots on their website and it looks every bit a s good as a ER car.

I like how Christian repurposed a "stock" building kit and gave it a new life as something else. According to Wiki, Subway has been around since 1968, but started its big expansion in the late 1970's and early 1980's. If Wiki is to be believed, the sign that Christian used is the post 2002 logo; though they do have an example of the black oval background 1968-2002 version.

OK... who makes that killer Kurbmaster hirailer??? Inquiring minds need to know!!! Its a 3d printed shell from shapeways It was meant to mount on a Bachmann hi rail chassis so the back was solid. I had to cut out the bed and make new walls and a floor from styrene and brass diamond plate. The frame is from a Roco dodge pickup, heavily modified. Wheels came off of a Roco army jeep, I forgot which one. Smoothing the print lines on the cab was the hardest part. It's one of my best models and it came out really good but it turned into way more work than I expected. One day I'll make another. Here's the back of it:

Christian I give you big ol thumbs up on that lil hors d'oeuvre. Since you have done the time and earned a great respectable model from your efforts, have you conceited adding LED's to give it life and animation?
