I find it odd that both quit AGAIN at the same exact time...Perhaps bgb and Joppasub are one and the same...

What the heck? I've never seen anyone come and go so much. But for Tom to go...this is crazy!

Banna has a long history of suddenly abandoning projects before completion, often switching eras and/or roads in the process. I think he even changed scales at least three times. I used to frequent his "6 axle power" website which had a lot of useful photos and techniques about assembling Cannon cabs and such, and then suddenly one day that, too, disappeared without prior warning.
I thought 'joppasub' was Tom Austin, aka 'mopac1' from the old Atlas Forum?

Like Jim Fitch, I have been busy renovating my current layout room. Drywall dust is relentless. I left the forum briefly for a couple of reasons. I will share progress with the new layout as it takes shape now that the drywall is done...room is painted...and when I finish the task of cleaning everything on the floor to remove dust.

I will share progress with the new layout as it takes shape now that the drywall is done...room is painted...and when I finish the task of cleaning everything on the floor to remove dust. Tell me about the dust. After sanding a bunch of the mudded areas raising a good deal of dust, my wife got out the leaf blower and raised an even bigger cloud which went into the utility room where my trains work bench and storage shelves are. Everything, I mean EVERYTHING was covered with a thick layer of mud dust. Thankfully my wife kindly spend a couple hours with the vaccuum in there and it's much better now; I cautioned her about some tiny parts which seem to have been spared the vaccuum! There was an ExactRail BN bulkhead with a couple loose parts that need glued back on which are still there. Yay. As a precaution I've hung plastic sheeting over the utility room unfinished doorway (no door installed yet) and reminded her to make sure the HVAC isn't running next time we raise a cloud as it sucks the air into the utility room as part of the cold air return. The good news is the main basement area is 99% hung with drywall, only the bathroom is left really all that's left so now it's pretty much taping and mudding and sanding until it's ready for a coat of primer. It's tons of work to do a 700 sq foot area with lots of angles and bends and boxed in ceiling beams. So will be several more months of weekends but I don't have a boat load of money to hire contractors to it all, only some essential parts. Thankfully my wife is a hard worker type-A person and on her days off is working on sanding and moving things along.

The dust is like one of those old horror movies...the blob, etc., Once I'm done with painting today...I'll start removing everything out of the shop and doing a thorough cleaning in there.
I decided to keep this account open...but I will limit myself to postings early in the morning during workdays (on the layout and room) and weekends...to show some progress. I am not going back on Facebook, however.
I want to contribute more modeling on Sunday Photo Fun...and less conjecture and opinions. I'm officially out of the armchair.

The dust is awful. I can't wait to be done with it. Unfortunately this is going to eat up all my spare time for a good while to come. Here is a glimpse of how things were before last weekend move things along further:

I've learned so much...skim coat; PVA primer; even better window treatments. I recommend Kilz PVA for new drywall. It dries in about 2 hours...and allows for final sanding (if necessary).

Not sure why you had to delete your account just because you were taking a break or are doing other work. I have always enjoyed your contributions to the forum. You are objective, knowledgeable and do not post multiple times on virtually every thread like some people in here. I see no need for you to change or to have departed. Stick around and offer your input as you have always done. Always look forward to what you have to say.

Good looking space! I'm only looking forward to that day when I can start one of my own.
I see you have the "every layout has to have one" breaker box in the sky!

Because I am not perfect...and I applied an absolutist theory to the social media thing...I've done that before. I appreciate your kind words. I am not an attention seeker, either. I will contribute more stuff in the way of actual modeling projects...and such.

Yeah, the breaker box is in a bad location. In my last basement the whoever finished it removed the door and mounted a panel over it using magnets to hold it in-place. I'm mulling that one over. and do not post multiple times on virtually every thread like some people in here. Was that mean spirited comment really necessary, whoever you were referring to.

Tom, I am glad you came back. I have to agree that social media is addictive. I am one that does not use Facebook as well. This is the one forum I turn to for info because it is always lively and with a broad spectrum of knowledge.
I hope both Tom and Jim the best in completion of their layouts. Sanding sheetrock is no fun what so ever but the results for a backdrop are worth it. Looking forward to updates from both of you.

I really like this forum overall...and miss the old Atlas forum. I need to stay consistent. Yeah, I am really limiting myself without Facebook...but I was getting to the point where all I was doing was checking this forum; checking Facebook; checking emails; etc., All of our model companies use it...and I had to accept that I am a bit less connected. The trade off is HUGE progress already. Drywall done; mudding done; primer done; and paint is now drying today. Karnak, IL...here we come.

I agree that social media like facebook is just a huge waste of time for very little valuable content. Mostly incomplete sentences, poorly organized content due to site design focused on tracking our clicks and behaviour. While there are still issues here, I still feel that ARF has a far better signal to noise ratio. Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater.
P.S. Any updates on your plastic caboose model company?

I agree. And with Facebook, there is no searching for old content. I always wonder what all those people who post to the forum and say "did you search first?" say when they are on Facebook. While there are still issues here, I still feel that ARF has a far better signal to noise ratio. Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. P.S. Any updates on your plastic caboose model company?Yes. I am still focused at this point on a Missouri Pacific Sedalia Steel Caboose. There is one that is about 25 miles from my home in great shape. I have permission and access to it. These are cupola-style cabooses that were built by the Missouri Pacific in 1949. They lasted all the way up the late 1980's. There are a couple of ways to go about this car...do a flat kit with injection molded sides; and use a commercially available (Tichy) under frame (fish belly) . Etched metal steps; and a handrail jig, etc., The other is our typical complete shell and under frame RTR...which is a substantial investment. Both methods would work...and could be done. I have the caboose tentatively scheduled for a 3D scan in the Spring/Summer this year. Athearn's teaser photos with their International Caboose leaves both established companies and fledgling wannabees (like me) in a lurch. I would safely say that Athearn's ability to crank out the EV cars is very real...and they would sell well. I wouldn't want to duplicate something that is already out there...so for now, I'll stick with the MP Sedalia cabs. Likewise, I wouldn't want to misrepresent the fact that I do not have the large amount of cash needed to do the full-on tool. Imagine me asking my wife..."I would like to take $25K and start tooling an EV caboose to go head-to-head with Athearn Trains"...I would be living in my pickup!!! My business name is Little Egypt Models. I haven't incorporated it yet with an LL C, because I have several other things in the fire. But, I think there is room for specialty caboose of all roads that AREN'T ICC EV cars. And, Ryan Harris has a plethora of ICC EV cabs on his shape-ways' sites in the meantime. He lays the parts out to where there is minimal print lines to remove...and they fit the existing Atlas EV caboose frame. Just another reason to focus on road-specific cabs. The 2020 NMRA Convention is at ST. Louis, and I might entertain putting my Joppa Sub on the tour. That was one of the reasons for the immediate tear down and revamping of the layout room. I am a modeler from 1982. I am indeed serious about doing my own thing...largely because I am tired of waiting and waiting for other companies to finally say..."yeah, uh, no."

Just noticed that Brian Banna's Youtube channel is gone. That's crazy. I wasn't finished re- re- re-viewing those. Maybe he is reorganizing under another name like Paul Budzik did?

He left after the latest melt down. The Youtube channel disappeared around the same time. Maybe he'll be back in 6 months or a year.
