Yes, I did replace the ends with resin cast parts. The car was cut down to the sides. I reused the Accurail under frame. I am not sure but I used either a Cannon or Moloco roof. I put the clinic on my RPM groups on Groups IO here: groups.io/g/RPMclinics-JamesWallThe clinic is in the files section.

Southern 5029 CF boxcar using the Accurail Exterior post car. Did you replace the ends on this car? Would love to read more about how you did this. Thanks! I’m not his spokesman, but it looks to my eyes like early PS sine wave ends made from what is most likely Branchline Berwick shells. I have a couple of waffle side cars in the works with these ends, using the Intermountain 5277 sides and strip styrene waffle depressions. EDIT: never mind, I see he replied already. I will leave my post here, as “a second way to skin the cat”.

A lot of love for Acuurail around these parts. The goal of my car fleet is a reliable, in era, representative fleet. Probably a quarter of my operations fleet cars are Accurail kits, i'm of the firm belief that with some weathering they blend in with many more detailed cars in a train. There's a nice sense of satisfaction you get from a simple kit, IM or Tangent wheels and KD #158s and it will run as long as you need it to. Last winter I weathered these two RDG 55T hoppers:

Excellent point, I will spray on some decontaminant, thanks for the suggestion!

Is that on the stock car only and why, what does that represent?

I finished this 50' superior door car earlier, it got the standard treatment of #158s and weathered trucks/wheelsets. Full weathering will happen...eventually. I decided to model one side with the door open. If you look in the background closely you see a 40' steel reefer that will be the next car built up.

^ I would sure love to see the underframes on these completed projects as you go along.

Here is an ATSF box car that is part of the Accurail fleet that I built a couple of years ago. This car was modeled with an open door.

Is that on the stock car only and why, what does that represent? CP sprayed lime in/on their stock cars as a disinfectant, which was a white colour. Because of this, CP just painted the lower 2/3rds of their stock car sides white so the staining would just blend in with the paint and look normal. This wasn't done on some stock cars converted from boxcars (that had wooden slats added in cut-out windows), thus the white patterns from lime disinfectant sprayed on/in the car sides are more noticeable: freight.railfan.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=cp278191&o=cprail

Judge Doom, I believe that Canadian National also sprayed the lower part of its wood-sided stockers white.

Sorry for the late reply, those ends are from the Wright Trak waffle boxcar. The Wright Trak and Exactrail/Scaltrains are two operate prototypes owned by Southern, both cars are correct!

Micro-Trains recently released a series of limited run factory weathered Accurail cars. I first read about them in RMC a few months ago. I purchased a couple of cars. They are not inexpensive at $50/car plus S&H, but they certainly are different. Both sides of the car are identical. I built the car body as is with no modifications, but I had to weather the trucks and wheels. I added 36" metal wheels, Kadee couplers and I added weight to meets NMRA specifications. I have to admit, I have more fun weathering models myself, but this is an interesting car that will attract attention on my layout.

10/19/24, about 8:37 p.m., EDT Judge Doom, I believe that Canadian National also sprayed the lower part of its wood-sided stockers white. CN did paint the lower 2/3rd of their stock cars white in earlier days (most evident on their old Fowler boxcars), but abandoned the practice at some point (1950's perhaps) and just painted the entire cars brown/boxcar red.

Hi Dave, thanks very much for your posts in the thread. I appreciate you doing this but am wondering if you might also consider sharing some photos of the underbodies for future projects? We always see the roof, sides and ends in various stock photos but not always the underframe. It doesn't matter what level of work you do underneath, I just like seeing whatever it is & this could provide angles not normally seen.
