Looking good Bobby. In a scene repeated countless times a day, CSX 8952 blows it horn as it crosses Shellmound Rd. Soon they will slow to "slow" speed as they enter the double track at Ladds, TN and begin their climb up Racoon Mountain. ![](https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1744/41916798365_85cee6057b_k.jpg) Enjoy, -Dave

Nice work displayed today. I have been working on an Athearn RTR GP60B. Among other things replaced the flat air tanks with full size and positioned them correctly on the frame. Also detailed out the trucks, added filters, lift rings, etc. Bob I like it! I'm old so....In 1984 Robert Zenk had an article in Mainline Modeler in which he took a factory decorated Athearn SD40-2 and added details, changed the number and made a fantastic model. Jim Six used to have articles in Model Railroading in which he took factory decorated models and added details. So you can say you either Zenked or Sixed your GP60. Hmmmmm Walthers Mainline is geared towards this type of modeler?

Matt,
I like the ICG's. Still the gray and orange is more appealing to me than the Darth Vader - AT&T logo era.

Nothing finished this week, so a couple oldies..... Tangent's super cool Big Sky Blue 4740. Athearn SD45's ![](https://i.imgur.com/RWQ1uCG.jpg) Spent Saturday enjoying the WWII aircraft of the Collings Foundation, they tour a B-17, 24, 25 and a two seat Mustang. In my "Trains and Planes" shot we have B-25 "Tondelayo" being readied for takeoff, looking across the field you'll note a couple sets of BNSF power idling at the south end of Boeing Field. The B-25 rawred, what a loud badass plane!

Not much change to the layout itself, but I have been improving performance by adding keep-alives and better decoders. ![](https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1755/42605649272_67a86ee425_c.jpg) DSC03127 (2) by wp8thsub, on Flickr Thus equipped, these locos should provide reliable service for future sessions.

Well instead of reaching back in the moldy oldies this week I decided to try a little modeling at the transplant house. Decided to start the weathering process on this IM Covered Hopper: PtLX 15349 Factory Paint by Jim Ramnes, on Flickr After a coat of soft mixing white on the roof and one side here is where we are. Long ways to go but it is good to get some hands on work in. PTLX 15349 First Fade Coat by Jim Ramnes, on Flickr Got a good photo to work from so this should really show my lack of skill by the time it is complete. Jim

Just about finished with this one. its a Dash 9 on a Kato frame and Intermountain ES44DC tucks, the body is resin. I have two more CN units not too far behind.
Nice job on this model; question what did you use for the walkway tread ?
Thanks, Jim

Great work everyone - nice batch of photo's.
Mark, love that Tangent GN hopper - nice paint scheme and purrrfect weathering. I had to have one of those and a green NP as well. The WWII planes are very cool - I always enjoyed the WWII movies. I got climb around one of those as kid when my dad was in the USAF many moons ago.
Rob, always a fan of you layout and Utah scenery. Perfect time period too.

Some more of my mediocre and feeble attempts at extensive body work. THIS IS NOT A BIG PUPPY SHELL. It is a Proto 2000 model. My best friend took the photos, which show all the problems. He also added text as this is something that he loves to do and is good at it too! I bought the model off e-Bay. It was painted in a home road. By the photo you can see why I called this thing the "turd". These kinds of resurrections are some of my favorite...remember the "rescued projects" thread on dieseldetailer? Flaws aside, when you consider where it started it looks great, and there's real satisfaction on saving a piece of junk.

Wow, this week is packed with eye candy. Great work, guys. We used to see a lot of CNW hoppers moving in UP trains on the MP-MKT joint line from Whitesboro to Fort Worth in the late 80s, so over the years I've picked up CNW hoppers to fill out a train of MP and UP hoppers. This Accurail 4750 hopper in faded blue makes it a dozen CNW cars. I put it next to some of my other CNW hoppers (one Accurail ACF 4600 and two P2K 4427s). The ex-Continental car and the ACF 4600 are the only ones I've finished out of the twelve. ![](http://www.pbase.com/mecrharris/image/167702362/large.jpg)

The former The Rock hoppers were a baby blue and patched rather poorly.

What would the heritage of the medium blue CNW hopper be? The former The Rock hoppers were a baby blue and patched rather poorly. These were the original cars, but by the late 80s/early 90s some had faded to blue. Tangent did a run of these faded cars, but I missed out on them. I have one each of Rock Island blue PS and Thrall 4750 hoppers, but I have not gotten around to patching the PS car yet.

Very cool, Ryan! If I was a late ‘90s UP modeler, I would love modeling all the CNW, MP, MKT, RI, and other heritage hoppers, in both original paint and UP shield schemes. I enjoyed photographing them down in Taylor when I was living in Georgetown.

Thanks, Dave. I love the variety from back in the 80s.
The rail corridors through Texas to the gulf have always been a showcase for a wide variety of grain hoppers, especially during peak grain season and during peak years. Even today there are times you'll see older paint schemes mixed in with the new. In north Fort Worth the former OKT nee Rock Island runs parallel to the former FW&D until Tower 29, then parallel to the former Santa Fe to Tower 60. Today it's the UP running beside the BNSF. As long as I can remember there were colorful grain trains on each road.
Things are a bit more uniform today with most BNSF and UP grain trains, but there's still a chance to see all those UP and BNSF heritage schemes, not to mention all the former elevator hoppers sprinkled in here and there. Every once in a while we get foreign road interchange trains to take south or to spot at one of the massive elevators in Saginaw. Then there are the customers who don't order entire unit trains. Everything from a single car of pinto beans to 24 cars of wheat for one of the flour mills can be seen here on a daily basis.
I had to pick some point in time to cut off, otherwise I'd end up buying one of everything. So the late 80s works for me since I liked the Katy and Mop fighting for time to get their trains over the joint line, when Cotton Belt still ran trains from Commerce to Fort Worth, SP still had a yard in Fort Worth, KCS locomotives wore white, BN had more coal business than they knew what to do with and Santa Fe thought 1200' of track was enough to tuck an intermodal facility into an unused parcel next to the highway. The late 80s just works for me.
But the late 90s were truly an interesting time in railroading. If you stray to the dark side and start a modest collection of UP heritage grain hoppers, I'd certainly understand.

I haven't done any serious modeling in quite a while, but am starting to get into it again. Here is a tree I made after watching some Luke Towan YouTube videos. I still have a couple things to touch up, but its 95% complete. ![](https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1778/42273801184_570e901e72_c.jpg) Also visited the SLMI club just outside of Denver this past weekend and took some photos. Most of the photos are of the narrow gague line that they are modeling from Salida, CO up to Marshall pass, down to Gunnisson, and the end point is Crested Butte. Jim, that ICG rack is an Accurail 89 footer with a completely scratch built rack on it. It was made from many styrene shapes, then custom painted and decaled (as is the flat). I wish I could take credit for it, but the car was built by Bryon Willicut. He had it and some other cars for sale a few years ago on a Facebook group. The car is amazing...full brake rigging, real chain on the handbrake, Genesis trucks with .88 wheels, Sergent couplers, air hoses, cut levers, the works. And it came with all of those Atlas Ford Fairmonts included...and each with a dealer sticker on one window! It's a wonderful piece that I am lucky to have snatched up. And if I could brag, what he wanted for it was far less than the combined cost of all those Fairmonts....

There are some great models on display this week. I wouldn't worry too much about any "flaws" that might be on the GP30 slug as one can make out the welds for the patches covering the openings for the radiators, rear number boards, class lights, etc. on the prototypes. While I don't know if the Walthers are specifically gearing their "Mainline" series to those that still prefer to super-detail projects (as with the GP60B), it doesn't hurt to still have an option for those who want to "Six" or "Zenk" their locomotives. Yeah, I grew up reading those articles as well and still have several paper-boxes full of RMC's, MM's, etc. with detailing/prototype articles.
Back to this week's progress. Despite some setbacks on my own layout, I did get a coat of paint and decals on the Sylvan Boxcar from last week. I still need to touch up the paint and decals, give it a coat of dull-coat, and add the final details such as the cut levers. But, it is at least getting there - and more importantly will be off my workbench hopefully by next week.
The funny thing is that when decaling it, I caught an error on the first one of those that I built in '03. It is numbered in the wrong car series. I briefly thought about fixing that mistake, but I decided it wasn't worth fixing a 15-year-old model. I have too many other projects that have a greater priority.

surlyknuckle, wish I could find more of those fairmonts at a decent price. Went to a train show in Tallahassee yesterday, managed to snag these: ![](https://i.imgur.com/QMZPCLO.jpg) However the DRGW car has the wrong trucks from the prototype photos I've looked up. I might slap some accurail Barber S2s under it since I have a set.
