Guys on Amazon there is a mini drill press that comes under different names , Gino, Dynamic etc .Are they all the same or different quality inside. They look same on outside but all priced over the map. Tired of using big unit fr thr train hobby. Thought one of these would work for the few holes etc I do a year, nothing intense. Thanks .Steve

I would go with the Microlux mini drill press...I have one and it will do anything I need it for. They have a Proxxon version on Amazon too...different colors, but same machine.
They have an add-on x-y table add on assembly too.
I don't skimp on these types of tools for the simple reason...you get what you pay for.
Micro Mark sometimes will have these on sale with free shipping, as well.

I bought this one from Micro Mark: It's quite nice, though not terribly powerful. The base is cast iron--a sturdy lad--maybe 20 pounds. I do like it. I can pick it up and carry it outside if I want. I wouldn't buy an x-y table for it; I'd buy a Sherline mill. Really. Ed

I have a Proton drill press with the add-on XY table. It's really quite nice and pretty much a go-to tool.

X-Y table? Anybody who has ever spent much time in a machine shop will tell you it is a bad idea to apply side force to a drill chuck.
Seriously folks, don't do it. X-Y table on a drill press should be used for locating holes only. NOT milling operations.

I use the x-y table for precision drilling...when the work piece is in a vise and needs to be exactly lined up. But drilling only.
I use a milling machine for any other type of cutting or precision surface area removal.

I use a milling machine for any other type of cutting or precision surface area removal. Ditto this. I have the exact same setup as Tom here. I use it ONLY for drilling and the X-Y table is excellent. Never use a drill press for milling. The lateral forces against the spindle is not good. If you want to mill something, get a proper mill. I use a milling machine for any other type of cutting or precision surface area removal. I’m pretty sure we are talking drill presses here. The XY table is great for precision drilling and such. For milling work I use my teeth.

Yes. I just don't know where the notion was gathered that we would use a drill press for milling?

Years ago, I worked in a flour mill. Oh wait, this is a Milling thread. 🙂 John

OK, so don't use a drill press as a mill. But what about using a mill as a drill press? I'm pressed for space, so one machine rather than two would be nice.

At least one of the Proxxon Drill Press/ XY set ups is for their "rotary tool". They are also sell dedicated mills, drill presses and XY tables for the later. \..
I bought the rotary tool when I moved to Germany a few years ago.. It actually runs off 12V using a seperate power pack.
Much of the Proxxon stuff is sold by MicroMark under their own label.. Different colors, but same equipment.

I have an older Dumore jewelers drill press. Its a pretty amazing machine. Foot pedal control, smooth as anything, and will take down to a #80 drillbit. They still make them, but they are stupid expensive.

I have a Dremel drill press that I bought about fifty years ago when I was flying R/C airplanes. Still works like a charm. There seems to be plenty for sale on the auction sites, had a quick look and some have sold for as little as a dollar.
