Hey guys anyone using computer power supply from inside computer for power source around layout.Like the 3 /5 and 12 volt options. Any thoughts good or bad. I was thinking about it but wondering about the high amps if there is and if raises an issue. I have been using designated transformers for different things around the layout, some guys use a central one of these power supplies???. Thanks Steve

I think there would be issues using that type of power supply. Most are looking for input signals from the PC's motherboard to start providing power. This article provides some info on what voltages are provided: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_supply_unit_(computer)

The input signal from the motherboard is really just connecting two wires briefly, to turn it on. My club uses these in places, and they work well.

Personally I prefer to use laptop power supplies. These are cheap enough and more than adequate. And they look safer to me.

I don't really know how suitable they are for model train use, but computer tower power supplies are available to handle much larger power draws that laptop power supplies if that makes a difference.

I just use an automotive battery charger. Been doing this longer than computers have been around.
