I wonder if all of the materials used to create the models will be toxic and have cancer warnings on them, unlike other mfgs who clearly make their products with cleaner, better materials. Check any product listing on walthers's website or any sales flyer they have sent you. Even the figures are tainted, everything is.

And I thought "my wallet is safe" was a crappy response to a new product announcement.

Haa! That's a good one! Psst, hey Siemen's, didn't you get a chance to talk to Athearn, Scale Trains, Rapido, Atlas, Kato, or anyone else?

Check any product listing on walthers's website or any sales flyer they have sent you. Even the figures are tainted, everything is. This "warning" comes from "California Proposition 65". Manufacturers put the label on to protect themselves from litigation. Do an internet search on "California Proposition 65" for more information. You will see this warning on most model trains just for this reason and not because the models are made of "dangerous" materials. A label is cheap compared to a lawyer.Bachmann has the ability to make very good models if they choose to. Their British OO scale models are extremely well made, look great, and run every bit as well as other manufacturers. They are interesting looking locomotives and I would have to see them before making a buying decision.

I welcome the SC-44 as it is becoming ubiquitous in California on Cal Train services. If Kader builds these to the standards of Bachmann Europe/UK they should be excellent value. Bachmann USA is all over the map in quality from toylike rubbish to excellent steam such as the Baldwin 2-8-0. I had some up close time with them in the Oakland Amtrak facility in 2017 when working on a friends private car. They are very quiet by comparison to the PH40's. Even though I model pre 1955, I will buy a couple just to have as shelf displays. With the announcement including new bi-level Siemens coaches, I wonder if we will get a California Cowl version with the sheet metal streamline transition to Cal-Trans/Amtrak California bi level coaches. Perhaps will have to be an aftermarket 3D print. Note photos way under 1 mb size are not attaching. See a set of charger photos at: srandsp.blogspot.com/2018/01/sc-44-charger-time.html

The Siemens coaches aren't bi-level, they are traditional single level coaches as can be seen in use by Virgin Trains USA in Florida and variations of those will be provided to the consortium of States that bought the Chargers and to VIA Rail.

I may pick up some, but I definitely want to take a wait and see approach to Bachmann models. I understand they've done a decent job with their other modern Amtrak stuff, but as they say, past performance is not an indicator of future results. Especially with Bachmann.

Makes me wish I still modeled in HO. But I don't, so "my wallet is safe"

It's actually nice to see someone release a model while it's still new. For years, we had to wait until something was "old" before it would get made in HO, but modern Amtrak modelers have had a few nice wins, even if from Bachmann. At a glance, they do a modest job even if it's not Rapido quality.

I understand that there was a hint by Horizon/Athearn that they may be interested in the SC-44 as well. Dueling Chargers? California content rules of course apply as the 1:1 scale versions are being built near Sacramento.

Botchmann can produce some pretty decent models when they want to, the GE E33 electric is pretty nicely done IMHO. Their GP7/9, for another example? Well... not so much.

While the Bachmann S4 is a very smooth runner and sounds ok (other then the extra loud turbocharger whine) its certainly no Atlas/Roco or Atlas (Red Box) S4 but, it is what it is.. Its still going strong after 6 years of service. OTOH my GE 70T gave up the ghost after 4 years of service due to cracked gears. While I'm not interested in the Siemens unit I'm interested in seeing how the model looks and especially the lights on the side.

This seems like a very preliminary announcement, not even any artwork. Could be they're just trying to get in ahead of Athearn's rumored Charger. Of course, Athearn usually waits until they have preproduction samples before they make an announcement, so for all we know they (or even someone else) could already be further along.

I have two of Bachmann's Amtrak ACS-64 electrics and they are very accurate and good running models. The TCS sound decoders take a bit of getting used to programming wise, but have excellent keep-alive. While the sounds seem appropriate for an electric , the only gripe I have is with the ersatz sounding K5LA horn. So far the Bachmann Amtrak electric locomotive models (Acela, HHP and ACS-64)are clearly a notch above their other offerings so I see no reason why these new announced models should be bashed just because they are Bachmann.

And I thought "my wallet is safe" was a crappy response to a new product announcement. Superb! My wallet is so safe, it actually checked in and marked itself safe on Facebook. My wallet is so safe, if an F5 tornado hits, I will calmly use my wallet for shelter. My wallet is so safe, Ralph Nader held it up as a shining example of safety when he lobbied Congress. My wallet is so safe, OSHA called, they want to put it a statue of it in the lobby of their home office. Www.instantrimshot.comI’ll be here every night this week, remember to tip your waitress!
