So Here is something different for everyone this week. Prototype photos I took the week of Sept. 2 to 7 2019. There was some talk of how coiled steel was loaded so take a look: Taken Harrisburg, PA. Raw steel bar being shipped to the mill, taken in Altoona, PA: And last for the Western Guys this Western Pacific boxcar, taken Altoona, PA and yes that is in 2019. I would be interested in the heritage of the WP box, WP 38258.

I finished the lion share of work on some cars this week. All 6 started as factory decorated Atlas cars. All were weathered to prototype photos, to match the cars in the mid 1990s. They have been on the work bench for awhile, as I couldn't figure out a good way to fade the doors and the lettering to the same color and didn't want to mess it up. In the end, I airbrushed artist acrylics on the ends, doors and side sills. The same color was used to paint, by hand, over the brown lettering to match. The balance of the weathering is artist oils.

Missed last week due to my attack of shingles made it so I did not want to do anything and my Brother-In-Law died after a long illness. I did manage to finish a couple of projects over the two week period. First up is a 40' Atlas 1944 AAR 40' Boxcar Kit, do match the prototype I chose the correct ends of the ones supplied, since the prototype was welded, I removed the rivits from from the battens which look like weld lines after the rivits were removed, added A-Line Sill Steps in place of the fragile plastic ones. Car was painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and Black Paints and lettered with Smokebox Graphics decals. The Bufallo Creek was owned by the LV & Erie and supplied boxcars to the various flour mills for shipment all over the country. Next is an old AHM/E&B Valley PS 3 Bay Covered Hopper Kit, substituted a Plano Roofwalk kit for the cast plastic one. Used this kit instead of the Athearn as the E&B car more closely replicates the size of the M&StL cars which were 3219 CF cars versus the 2873 CF cars. Car was painted with Scalecoat II UP Covered Hopper Gray paint and lettered with Mark Vaughn decals now available from Clark Probst a noted M&StL modeler. Rivarossi U25C's with a coal drag on the Strongsville Model Railroad Club Layout. By the way the WP Car is a FMC 5077CF Boxcar, here is the as delivered version in the original paint scheme, later deliveries had the styled Feather!

Just a bit of touch up and I'll have these two ready for decals. A little panel accent color for the grilles: I'll complement the wash on the intake grilles with some weathering powder when it's all said and done.

Good weekend to all. Nice modelling going on in the photos above. I don't have much new to share this week, but I thought my SD40-2W work in progress might suffice. Today was handrail day. Well...mostly. Stanchions are from Smokey Valley and are a mix of the brass and plastic ones. Handrails themselves are Tichy .0125" phosphor bronze, and I'm happy to not be using steel music wire any more. PB is so much easier to work with. I still have to fabricate the tall stanchion over the electrical cabinet, and then I have to add the stanchions on the front and rear, and the wired ditch lights. Going to be a bit of work, but I've done it once before so it's not too big an issue. Wish I had something other than a freezer lid to pose them on, but that will come in time. Enjoy the weekend, and keep building beautiful trains!

Wish I had something other than a freezer lid to pose them on, but that will come in time. A few years back super-duper model builder John Pitts (I think no longer in the hobby) posed his models on the dark blue hood of his pick up truck. Pickup truck, deck rail, freezer top - its all good because we want to see the models.

I think I said something to the same effect before, but this deserves repeating: That's one freakin' nifty model.
