First up is a car that is out of my norm for a prototype car! An Athearn Quad Hopper car, painted with Floquil Blue paint and lettered with decals I managed to acquire from the Tanana Valley Model Railroad Club in Fairbanks, AK. The Usibelli Coal Mines are located in Healy, AK and ship coal to areas out of Alaska via Seward, AK. They have their own cars but the club created decals using the UCM logo. Tangent Bethlehem Steel 52'6" Gondola Kit, painted with Scalecoat II PRR Freight Car Color, as the Lehigh Valley was controlled by the PRR at the time and they shared a lot of materials. Car was lettered using Champ Decals. McKeen Models ACF 50' Exterior Post boxcar kit, substituted wire grabs for the plastic ones, also used a better molded Branchline Diagonal Panel Roof in place of the kit one. Also painted the car with PRR Freight Car Color as the prototype had a redder version of the Boxcar Red paint. Decaled with Herald King Decals. Cars eventually moved to the Southern and then the new Norfolk Southern railway. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski

So it has been awhile since I posted to SPF. I know I have posted teasers of this model but here is the finished product: This started as an Accurail 3 bay ACF hopper. Model was shortened to Southern prototype 4000 cf length. Added wire grabs, Tichy brake components, Plano walkway(cut) and other details Car painted with with Scalecoat II UP hopper gray and lettered with Mask Island decals produced for this car. With all the talk of the B36-7 here is a model I did years ago off the Atlas B30-7: I used Atlas B30-7 and B23-7 parts, Smokey Valley Dash 7 high hood kit. Great work to everyone today!

I have nothing new to contribute this week, but beautiful work everyone. I especially love that coil gon! I might need to build a few of those myself.

It's really easy and I'll be building a few more. If you do build one, don't make the same mistake I made on the coil rack. There should be six I-beams in there, not five. I have seen these from above many times and did that part from memory. Wouldn't you know it, as soon as I pop the rack inside the gondola I find a prototype photo showing the rack...

A while ago I posted some photos of a NYC boxcar using the Branchline kit but this time it is another NYC boxcar but this one is an older prototype that used the old P2K single door 50' as a starting point: I used the basic kit but modified to match the rebuilt NYC car. I lowered the ladders, replaced the P2k coupler boxes with Kadee #178s, lowered the tack boards on the door and added the reinforcement under the door. I also lowered the hand brake and added a Kadee brake wheel. I also replace the oversized grabirons with Kadee ones. I then painted the car with PollyScale jade green that I added some light blue to. I lettered it with Mircroscale decals and then faded and weathered it for a NYC still in service for Penn Central. Kit still holds up well and many can still be found on Ebay and other sites and it is easy to strip the paint. Penn Central repainted a number of these and these lasted into early Conrail.

Thanks! It's really easy and I'll be building a few more. Are you able to make 2 from 3? I think so, but it would be at the expense of the underframe detail. I placed the cuts on the two cars so the underframe bracing would be symmetrical, but I don't know if that conforms to the prototype or not. I just didn't want to be distracted by it. But if that wouldn't bother you then I say sure, you could cut two middles out of the Accurail car easily. It might be able to be done symmetrically, but without uncut cars in front of me I'm having a hard time visualizing it.
