Nice looking unit. The weathering is great, especially the fuel tank.

Finished another Penn Central caboose and used the venerable Bowser N5 caboose with some basic upgrades including wire grabirons, American Model Builders "modern" windows, and a non-standard paint job. It was painted Scalecote PC green and lettered with Microscale, PCRRHS, and MG Decals decals. Weathered with pencil, PanPastels, and an airbrush.

I spent the weekend in the basement getting plastered. Also had a go at carving some rock work for the East Dubuque tunnel. Not as exciting as a finished product but I thought I'd share anyway. The prototype spot. After my era but bluffs don't change much. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=4466526Tim VanMersbergen

It turned out pretty good considering you got plastered! When you get shellacked you'll have to post more photos!

Beautiful work this week! Here's some stuff I've been working at...……. Second of three ScaleTrains SD40T2's is done being weathered Some in process boxcars Atlas Evans 52'RBL with Plano cut bars and crossover walks, plus some Tangent 70 ton trucks to replace the Atlas "things". I've started weathering it lightly but it has a ways to go. Genesis PC&F 100 ton boxcar, SP car B100-8 used for tinplate service, so far the model has some new correct Genesis trucks, Plano cut bars and a few decals (COTS and ACI) plus a healthy coat of clear gloss to start some weathering.

Good afternoon from mostly sunny and cold Northeast Ohio! Managed to get a couple of projects done this week! Tangent G43 Gondola Kit, that was built with the addition of a coil trough for hauling steel coils. Kit was built then painted with Scalecoat II PRR Freight Car Red, then lettered with Dan Kohlbergs IC decals for this car. I am showing both sides of the car as the sublettering is different on each side. Coils were supplied by Tangent for filling the car. Branchline 1944 AAR 40' Boxcar Kit, using the 4/4 Dreadnaught Ends and Diagonal Panel Roof. Car was painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and lettered with Mask Island Decals. Original car built in 1948 and this is a 1962 repaint in the then current ATSF Paint Scheme, car was in general service. A pair of Atlas Alco RS-32 Diesels that were detailed with lift rings, blat horns and grabs as the NYC did these units, hauling a mixed freight on the Strongsville Model Railroad Club layout. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski

Thanks for asking! The models all got handled quite a lot as I added the detail parts to them, no matter how clean your hands are you'll leave fingerprints. Also the printed decoration are typically gloss while the car's painted color may be flat, so I've found that Dullcote does not cover fingerprints, if anything it accentuates them so when you attempt weather over them with chalks your fingerprint will appear! It's very difficult to get rid too, so I've found that after I'm done with the model work a good coat of gloss seals the finish (covers decal film too) and creates a level, hard glossy surface that's uniform between the paint and decoration as well. After the gloss has dried ( a couple minutes when you cut it with good car lacquer) you can then apply dullcote to begin weathering - at this point I usually am very careful about handling the model so as not to fingerprint it, trucks and couplers are good places to hang on! It's important to note that I have a nice permanent spray booth built in next to my modeling desk so shooting various coatings is easy and quick.

Makes sense to me! And I think most of us have had the dreaded finger print revelation during the course of a project.
Thanks for the explanation.

I cut up an old basketcase Walthers coil car to use as the cradle of this N&W coil gondola. I got the idea after looking over the drawings for the prototypes on the N&W Historical Society website. Other than lacking the bracing at the ends of the cradle this is pretty close to the prototype. I'd hoped to have the Union Pacific coil car done by now, but the cradle for it is lost in the mail. Oh well, I'm sure it will turn up soon enough. Maybe in time for New Years photo fun?
