Think I'll get a BCOL box to go with my Kaslo kit. Waiting for second run to grab a dozen or so CNW as-delivered cars.

Nice looking boxcars.. The CR,CSX and BN would work for me.. Don't recollect seeing BCOL in 95/96 the era I model.

Looking forward to the NSC 5092s I have on order. I will always support an era-appropriate Canadian-prototype-specific freight car that could reasonably be expected to operate on the prairies!

I'm down for one of each: A Railbox PS 5077 as it's one of the earliest Railboxes and perfect for my 1975 era. And an early BCOL NSC 5092.

Thanks for posting those links Colin. I didn’t see anything that looks objectionable to me. Glad to see the improvements on the end details and the roof. If these look good in person, I'll definitely order more. Thanks, Mark

Car is looking better. Still big concerns about the Penn Central color.....even the corrected green looks off at least based on the photo. Just buy some Scalecote PC green and match it to that!
I hope those PC graphics are just a rough version of the actual PC lettering. Not close yet to the correct version.
I will certainly take a wait and see approach to this car.

Car is looking better. Still big concerns about the Penn Central color.....even the corrected green looks off at least based on the photo. Unless viewed on a colour-calibrated monitor it's hard to know if the revised PC colour is correct. Monitor colours vary with the make and model of the monitor and with age. Did anyone see these cars in person at the Springfield show and if so, what was their impression of the PC colour?

I looked at the PS 5077 photos last night, and it looks like they made a number of improvements (thanks, Darryl!). Without comparing them to the old photos, which I'd have to dig for, the roof definitely looks thinner, which is important to me. The only thing I really have a complaint about is the end ladders, although they are improved over the previous test shots. On the original samples, it looked to me like the outside styles of the ladders (the vertical parts closest to the corners of the car) were molded into the end of the car. Seeing these now, I think they were just glued directly to the car end. On the revised version, it's clear that the ladders are a separate part, but they are still applied too close to the car end, instead of standing off the end like the prototype: The ladders styles also kind of look like pieces of styrene strip with horizontal rungs attached to them. Just not a good rendition of them, to my eye. However, that's something I can fix if it really bothers me when they arrive. I can easily replaced them with ExactRail ladders, for example. I think the underbody details look good - all the major components, piping, and brake rods appear to be present. A little hard to tell looking straight down on them, but seeing things like the vertical hangers for the brake rods it encouraging. Lastly, I am absolutely thrilled to see the newer style Youngstown door on the CSX scheme, which is a defining visual feature of the CSX box car fleet. This is only the second factory-painted CSX model to go to the trouble of replicating that very important detail (for CSX modelers), the first being the Spring Mills Depot Canstock car. Thank you, Darryl! I'm looking forward to getting my CSX 6-pack, even if I decide to tinker with some of the details. This is a really important car for my box car modeling interests. Dave

Dave As a CSX modeler, everything you said resonates. I'm thrilled about getting a plate B car of this variety, door and all! As a WC modeler, this is just as big a milestone! Huge amounts of 5077s were absent until now, with 5277 cuft stand ins abound, terrible artwork, and just overall lousy execution. While I will give Exactrail the crown for best WC boxcar (Gunderson 6269), this will fit right in.

There is a Penn Central Historical Society that has, IRCC, authoritative data, information, color guide for the green colors so why did they spend so much time matching colors to photos, PMS, Pantones, etc... and then have to redo it over a second time? I think they created a Scalecoat Penn Central Green paint. Th small parts need flashing/parting lines touched up. Draft gear box looks a bit tilted. This stirrup steps on the car end look very odd and or over sized. Overall - looks like a nice model for the 1970's.

The logo on the BN box is very poorly applied. A person could wonder how many cars ever existed with that paint. ONE?
The stiles (not styles) of the ladders are too fat. Which is true of all the other models, for that matter.
The roofs on some of the cars have a low spot. I'm kinda sensitive about this, after buying a Union Terminal Import brass car.
I'm still at the point where I'll let youse guys jump in the water first. Any sharks? Oh.

I wasn't going to mention it because i did a small bit of due diligence in comparison.. but, I agree on the stirrups. Especially, and perhaps only, on the recessed skirt cars (ATSF/BN/WC etc). I couldn't put my finger on it, but they do look off. Either they hang too low or they are too wide. I compared them to a few proto shots and it doesn't show up terribly when I compare. But my eye is drawn to it.

The other detail part that caught my attention is the bell crank on the hand brake - follow the chain down to what appears to be a 'blob' of something. Are any actual drawings from these car being used or is all the cad work being done by viewing photographs?

I think the side stirrups on the cars look a little thick too, but that could be a compromise for durability. Now the end ladder vertical stiles do look thick. With regard to lettering, at least for the PC cars, I found this site which sells a Penn Central Equipment Painting Plans Book. Anyone have this book? I am planning on buying a copy. Thanks, Mark

Thanks, Mark I do not have the specific book but I do have the paint diagrams that are part of the book. These paint diagrams seem to show how the PC wanted their cars to be painted but do not provide specific details on how the cars were actually painted. They should be considered a starting point but need to base models on photos as actual cars were based on what stencils the shops had or were provided. For instance the PC used 4 different style of numbers...PRR style, NYC style, PC normal style and PC narrow style numbers. The PC 5007 car appears to use the PC narrow style. Reporting marks also varied in style (most subtle) and size. Boxcar car logos also varied but PC 5007 looks like the standard size as provided in the Microscale PC decal set. The PC Equipment Plan book is interesting but cannot be used as good info on how to accurately paint and letter cars unlike say PRR paint diagrams which show exactly how to paint PRR equipment including exact sizes for data, logos, numbers and reporting marks.

I think the issue with the stirrups is that they are thicker all around compared to the prototype, which affects the appearance in a number of ways. In the case of the square stirrup steps on the WC (and CSX) scheme, the thicker stirrup makes it look like it’s close to the angled part of the side sill and the end of the sill. It just kind of throws the overall look off a bit to me. I can’t comment much on the other styles, since I’m used to looking at that particular square prototype stirrup, but it seems to be a common issue with models. It’s hard to replicate the fine metal prototype part with a plastic part in HO scale. The stiles (not styles) of the ladders are too fat. Which is true of all the other models, for that matter. Argh, I sometimes think autocorrect will lead to the end of modern civilization! I’m usually better about catching those, but I was in a rush when I posted that. The model ladders are a nuanced detail, in my opinion. Just small changes in shape, dimensions, and proportions can affect their appearance. For comparison, I think ExactRail did a better job with their Southern waffleside box car with slightly narrower stiles that make the space between them a little wider: Dave

Dave,
I am sadly cursed with having no smartphone. But can't you convert autocorrect to autosuggest? I did it in Word. Usually it's right, but sometimes I just say no.
Anyway, I will disagree with the implication of your use of the words "slightly narrower". The stiles on the NARC car are 61% wider than on the Exactrail. No "slightly" there!
And that bothers me. After getting yelled at about some serious problems, they just left this. I'm just not having much confidence in them.

From what's on their web page I'd say needed replacement details seem abound, from adding new end ladders, brake wheel, coupler platform replacement, Yarmouth side stirrups plus other upgrades cut bars, hoses, etc.. looks like I'll need an undec body shell to start from scratch. Looking around I've got about 4-5 PCHS bottles of the correct scalecoat II PC paint plus correct decals. Oy Vey!!!!
