H all,
I am modeling an adaptation of the UP Howard Fogg power car. What I have seen modelers use is the Details Associates GR-2717 GE 8-40CW grill for the side grills. Unfortunately, this part is hard to find. I am looking for advise on a detail part that is similar to this one, and can be used on side grills.
For reference, here is the actual car:http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1624947

Maybe a Genesis F7 or Proto E8 side grill might work if cut into two horizontal sections.

An E8 grill was something I was thinking off.
My model itself will be a "foobie" anyway. The proper Baggage Dorm I need is a rare Walthers Proto model that goes for $120. I am going to modify a Budd Baggage Dorm instead. It's all kinds of wrong, but it will look like a power car for under $50.

I too agree with using stacked F or E unit grills. Have you considered this route if you want a slightly more accurate car? They have most of the UP business car sides. And they can send them to you ready to fit to a Walthers core.

I have given the Union Station version a lot of thought. I ruled it out because, for now, I also wasn't in the mood to paint and decal the model. This is going to be a test run of what I'd need to with the correct model. I am going to order a triplicate set, and once I am happy with how this one came out, I will probably modify the expensive version.

That makes sense, definitely stick to what your comfortable with and press on when your ready.

It looks like an easy kit bash. I don't need to cut holes, just add a few parts to the roof and the grills. Harry Haythorn wrote it up in the inaugural issue of The Modeler's Journal.

Talk about fortune favoring me. My local store had every detail part jncluigng the -8 grills. Well, now he doesn’t have the grills. 😊
