About a month ago Evan H. started a thread in the Extra board about the single trailer TTX Flats, for those (like me) that did not see it initially, go check it out: atlasrescueforum.proboards.com/thread/7974/ttx-single-trailer-flats
The thread turned into a great discussion on these cars. A few others mentioned building them, so I figure I would start a fresh thread with just that. I hope I am not the only one that posts here!
I have done some more digging around online, as mentioned before, the Bowser car is find of a mesh of several PRR F30 class flats. Its not a bad model, but its dated. The TTX F30G cars are made up of two classes as outlined by Paul Ellis:
"Ex-Pennsy F30-series flats, re-classed as F30G. Two groups, TTX 475001-475086 (ex-F30A), and TTX 475087-475286 (ex-F30D)."
The biggest change to the base model I have found so far is the handbrake. As built, the cars had a handbrake...not even sure what you want to call it, that went through an extension of the draft gear on the outer edge, as seen here: jbritton.pennsyrr.com/images/f30d_end_pc.JPG
When the cars were converted, they modified this area, and torched it all out, and put a more traditional hand brake gear, atleast, thats what I am getting out of it.. Here is a few photos from Hoosier Valley RR Museum showing as such:
I simple just chopped it all of the end of the Bowser and sanded it smooth.
I made the poling pockets just by running a round file over the corner with a few quick swipes. I rebuilt and narrowed the draft gear using some .030 square styrene, then made a square out of .020, and finally an additional layer of .010x.030 to give it an overhang. The top edge is also .010x.030 that I cut into a triangle and glued to the upper edge. Its not perfect at all, but it works for me, and gives it a little more better looking appearance.
Details West bridge plates, and some Hi-Tech Hoses (Never used before, but I like them so far). The hitch is one from the Walthers 75' car, which is an ACF Type A. The hitches in the new Walthers parts pack, while much nicer, and not correct, thus,, back to the original hitch idea from the 75' Car. I honestly hate it. Its way too chunky looking. So, I am not sure where to go yet. I MIGHT look into 3D printing them..but we will see. I AM going to be printing the chain rail "thing". Tire guides will just be styrene. Cut bars, It seems no two are alike, but Stanrays are the most common. I am using Plano's.
I am building two cars, one brown, one yellow. So far I picked up Tru Color PRR Freight Car Brown and Railbox Yellow, well see how they look.
Back to stripping the 2nd one.
