Athearn has started to do live shows on YouTube on Tuesdays, amongst the things they do is a Q&A session for some of the question viewers submit so people may be interested in watching the existing videos or taking part in future videos.
Some highlights from the 3 previous editions Q&A sessions include talk about California Cars/Surfliners (April 14th), hinting about an upgraded P40/42 coming, new release of UP 844, upgrading of existing steam models and considering possibility of new steam models, and looking for feedback on what new modern tank cars people would be interested in buying.

Do you have a time stamp for the P40/42?

Nope, didn't pay that close attention. Though anyone who wants to check out the videos the Q&A sessions are easy enough to find - they use a different background and usually put up a live webcam feed of a real railway as background.
The P40/42 was hinted at in both the April 7th and 14th episodes I believe.

I'm probably not too educated about detailing and stuff on the P40/42's, but my biggest problem with them was the awful silver paint. That along would get me thinking of replacing them. IF it was fixed.
I'm not interested in more of THAT.

Are you thinking of the Walthers exclusive releases? The silver paint on those had metal flake. I never had an issue with the silver for the models that Athearn released themselves. IF it was fixed. I'm not interested in more of THAT. Ed The ones released 2014-2016 had that fixed, along with many other improvements like window gaskets, a retooled nose, and finer details. I sold my originals long ago and now only own the newer ones. The first improved run had the gaskets for the windshield on the shell itself which made them look way too big and gave it a “raccoon eyes” look. The last two runs they did had the gaskets on the window glass, which looks much better. Hopefully they do more improvements if they come out with another run.

I'm hoping the P42s are moved to the Genesis line.
I noticed if you go to the Athearn page the P42s are not listed on the RTR page.

I just went to the garage and dug out my fleet: 99176 & 99177 (the Walthers), 88707, 91571, 98184, 98185. Yes the Walthers are far worse than the others. But. I don't like the others, either. Not as bad as the Walthers, but....... Not something easily fixed, like a broken off horn. Ya gotta strip the paint and repaint. Which then makes it not very RTR, I would think. When these new locos come, I will certainly want to replace the Walthers. For the rest, we'll see. Ed

I'm hoping the P42s are moved to the Genesis line. I noticed if you go to the Athearn page the P42s are not listed on the RTR page. Yeah, it's been that way for 2 or 3 years now. They pretty much discontinued it, which is why I'm hoping it comes back new and improved rather than just as another run of the last version.

I hope it's true though.

Where's the Dash 9/AC4400 they hinted at last year? It was more than a hint, they showed CAD screenshots of one as well as a Siemens Charger and some type of caboose. But both of those locomotive types have since been announced by other manufacturers, so I don't know if Athearn will continue working on them.

I believe it's been reported that the Athearn Charger is dead because Bachmann has an exclusive license. It was more than a hint, they showed CAD screenshots of one as well as a Siemens Charger and some type of caboose. But both of those locomotive types have since been announced by other manufacturers, so I don't know if Athearn will continue working on them.

My notes/recollections/possible errors
- lot of GE models in the works - won't rule out the P30CH - SDP40 - hopefully - fuel foilers / impack cars - new run likely - asked about low & high snowplows in the parts line - viewed as a good idea - a model to be released this summer, Matt has been working on it for 3 years - consider SP Pacifics as part of any future steam models - surfliners/california cars - lot of requests, even outside of California, 2 locos to pull them so should be high on list of possibles
- 72' cryo-trans reefers - they want them so chances pretty good. - Genesis SPFE 57' Reefers - asked about, not much comment
- dd40x (dda40x) - good things coming
Looking for input - help@athearn.com
- CN tank train cars - interested in doing them but need info, anyone who can help with the research email them and mention Matt.
- Genesis well cars - interested? what features wanted if done? feedback?
- Heritage Units - for future runs, do people want the standard satin finish or do people want a high gloss shiny finish

Be still my heart!!!!! + Let me count the ways. (Cheesy quotes brought to you by me!) Well, there's nothing WRONG with running more of these, though I'm already fully stocked. There are those of us who want the earlier A and B. And, yes, that COULD be the C-855's. But it's not. Ed

Hopefully they can get the licensing from Cryo-Trans for their logo. That's the main reason Walthers has never been able to do another run of them.

Where's the Dash 9/AC4400 they hinted at last year?
Note that in the ScaleTrains Q&A (just released highlight video to YouTube today) it was mentioned that they would like to get another couple of runs from their Dash-9 and then they would likely due the AC4400.

Whoever does accurate CSX AC4400s first will be making a lot of money off of me. A LOT.

A Genesis P-42 in latest paint scheme would be on my list.
I have the Kato models but not happy with details, lighting and drive.
I also need another set of 11 RTR CSX bethgons.

I also need another set of 11 RTR CSX bethgons. RMT In black? Silver? Grey? I meant new number set to add to the ones I already have. I will check to see what recent series I have purchased in past. I missed out on the 11 Athearn RTR Bethgons in gray paint scheme from a few years ago. The CSX roadnames have been sold out as soon as released over the years. These coal hoppers have excellent detail and I decided not to run them on the same train with all of the Walthers and LBF coal hoppers that we have collected over the years...but a 66 car Athearn Bethgon train is a $2500.00 investment. Thanks, RMT

I would have to agree with jonklein, the drive in my Kato P42s is simply the best HO drive I have ever come across. I have had my 2 for almost 7 years now and they are still precisely speed matched, even after a decoder swap to LokSound 5, and they pull like champs. I am constantly amazed at their ability to pull my early 00s Lake Shore Limited (15 passenger cars, 7 of which are Walthers proto Amsleds, plus 13 mail/express cars and 6 roadrailers) at a scale 79mph without struggling.

Those Athearn models are from the 2004 announcement (91571), 2007 (98184, 98185), and 2008 (88707), so definitely the older paint jobs. Amazing how many runs of P40/P42s they’ve done. I’d like to see a Genesis-level version, but I’ve already invested in the most recent run and several of the Details West detail kits, which I think will bring them up to that level of quality. I might consider putting Kato motors in them for smoother performance. Dave

I've found that just using any type of ESU decoder improves motor performance enough to where it is useable.

On the 5/12 Athearn Train Tuesday they said they might produce the RRMX hoppers (Robertson's Ready Mix Agregate train).
