True, I forgot about the Canadian part. So maybe not a Dash 7. But I'm not so sure about it being a GEVO, they already make both the early phase ES44AC and ES44DC, the Tier 4 has been done by ScaleTrains, and the C4 is specific to BNSF. It could be a later phase ES44AC but that seems too similar to the existing product for it to be worthy of a new announcement of a "brand new project".
Back in January 2019, Athearn posted some teaser CAD screenshots in a Facebook post of three upcoming projects. One was a detail shot of a Siemens Charger roof, one was a caboose of some kind, and one was a Dash 9 or AC4400 series GE based on the radiator section. A couple Train Tuesdays ago they said they had to stop working on the Charger due to Bachmann getting the exclusive licensing for it from Siemens, but no word on that GE. I bet they delayed the Dash 9/AC4400 due to ScaleTrains announcing theirs later that month, maybe that project is emerging now? The "green light 3 years ago" part might suggest that as well.

They probably wont do the Dash 9 in Genesis with Scale Trains flooding the market, and there's still the Intermountain version which may see the light of day someday. If they beat everyone to the punch on the AC4400, that would be a big win for them. I know I would get a couple CP units for sure.

All of those post Dash8 GEs are out of my modeling period, but if there's any one that I would have liked to see it's the AC4400. Given how much is shared between the Dash9 and the AC4400 I'm sure it's just a matter of time before we see a premium model from both ScaleTrains and Athearn, if not others.

Athearn looks like is doing UP, CNW, BNSF (H1 & H2), NS Top Hats, and CN & BCOL CWLs. My wallet is definitely NOT safe now thanks to the offerings of the Canadian cab Dash 9s for sure and possibly more.

Agreed. I also was hoping that they might be releasing some CSX AC4400's. Before the GEVO's started showing up, it was hard to go out and railfan around where I live and NOT see at least one. The BC Rail and CN 9-44CL's with their open-tread walkways, different looking cabs, etc. at least sound interesting. While not too common in Middle TN, they do show up from time-to-time. One of my railfan friends managed to photograph one, CN 2500, in Nashville in what was a very Canadian looking scene - snow on the ground which is a rarity for us.

I see the numbers include CNW 8646 and 8701, which kept their CNW paint jobs through 2017.

I hate to say it, but I'm hoping ScaleTrains will beat Athearn to the punch with a top-quality CW44AC (gotta stick to the CSX nomenclature!). They make up a big portion of my planned CSX diesel fleet, and I'm a little nervous about Athearn's track record (paint color, lettering, etc.), while I'm thoroughly impressed by the look of ScaleTrain's diesel releases.

A little surprised that Athearn is not doing Santa Fe in this first run. Since many of us thought ST missed on the color for their Santa Fe C44-9,

C44-9WLs??
HELL YEAH
I guess that means I don't have to look for Kaslo cabs for my Dash 9s anymore! I was totally wrong on my guess but I'll gladly take it!

Holy duplication, Batman! ST's Dash 9's have been out for a while so this surprises me. Have little interest in either 9's or AC4400's but it seems odd to do the same thing as a competitor while an AC4400, using many many of the same parts, is sitting there waiting to be done.

I get that, but the ST Dash 9 was announced in Jan 2019 according to the date on their youtube vid. It's not like it came out 6 months ago. ST is in relatively few LHS so perhaps that plays into Athearn's thinking. Not everyone will order online. eta-It's not like the ST Dash 9 is lacking something a competitor can swoop in and do a lot better. Unlike the SD market when ST came out with those.

With ScaleTrains and now Athearn doing Dash 9s, please tell me SOMEONE is going to do a top-notch Dash 8. We desperately need ST/G2.0 quality Dash 8s in both standard and Wide cab variants.

BNSF has a zillion of the C44-9W's. Maybe two zillion.
I've got or have on order 8 ST C44-9W's. They have ESU.
I will likely order some Athearn C44-9W's. The have Tsunami.
It's been commented that the two decoders aren't terrifically happy running together.
Thus I can run ESU consists and Tsunami consists. Why? Because then I can insert OTHER types of locomotives in a consist featuring either version of the C44-9W, and not have to get anxious about the combined running qualities.
The same reasoning holds for other "base" locomotives. On the BN, that would be SD45's and SD40-2's.

Agreed 100%. The Atlas model is long in the tooth and they don't seem to want to upgrade it. It's high time for a River Counter/Genesis quality Dash 8 line (B39-8, B40-8, B40-8W, B32-8PHW, C40-8, C40-8W. Bonus points if anyone does CSX 9000s!).

I'm definitely interested in a Horsehead C40-9 even though NS has rebuilt all of them. I presume Scale Trains will likely be doing them in the not too distant future as well, so it could be a tough decision. The Athearn artwork shows the correct configuration for the rear radiator grills, something Scale Trains didn't quite get right.

During the Train Tuesdays they have been clear there are several GE models in the pipeline.
It also (if not from Athearn) is somewhat inevitable that more older GE models (and perhaps Alco/FM/etc) will be done as the EMD lineup gets filled out with recent tooled items.

Lead times on these projects are 2-3 years. Doesn't make sense to shutter a project that's halfway done, especially from a business standpoint. It could be reasoned that the Dash 9 was no longer the best possible project to do once another high-quality one was announced. But it was still our best bet. We also saw the need for an accurate Canadian Dash 9-44CWL and a highly-detailed CNW Dash 9-44CW, both of which haven't been offered before in plastic. As for the other versions, they are different paint/detail versions than have been offered by other manufacturers. Combine that with (potentially) greater store availability and I think we have a chance.

C44 dash 9's to date (will use the BNSF scheme to keep comparisons easy, plus it's a nice paint scheme. Not as nice as Penn Central, but ok) Athearn Roundhouse (those trucks didn't age well) www.athearn.com/ProdInfo/LargeImages/RND78043.jpgWasn't wild about Athearns whole primed for grime thing, but GE's do represent a golden opportunity to showcase their engine thermal and oil exhaust fire management Latest Kato Dash-9's (BNSF was older run) Older run Kato, note truck differences Some customizeded Kato dash 9's (those handrails though...) trainmaster.ch/ZX-743.htmMTH video closeup

This forum is usually the home of scathing criticism and slap fights so I have been glad to read this thread so far. And any chance of the Santa Fe warbonnets? I think you have an opening there as ScaleTrains missed the mark on the red and silver colors on theirs.

Neither the Genesis nor the ST will grace my collection so I really don't care. Just found it odd for two manufacturers to battle over a piece of pie when there is a nice big slice (AC4400) sitting off to the side ignored. A model in which a lot of the parts cross over. And yes, I know development takes time. Find it hard to believe the steel was already cut for these over a year and half ago however.

I wasn't overly impressed with the quality of a friend's Scaletrains -9s (there was a grill on two units that kept popping off), and since I've had zero issues with my Athearn Genesis models, I will likely get a UP -9./

Still lots of hours sunk into a project even before tooling is done. More competition the better. As much as I would love to see a Lima switcher or transfer loco, they'll sell a lot more Dash 9's. Smart manufacturers do read this and other forums, and take all our nitpicking and use it to improve and differentiate their product. Since we're putting in requests a non-sound undec (unassembled please!) with a high headlight would be top of my list. I'd also like to see trucks absolutely nailed before even thinking about all the underframe details. I personally don't care if the bearing caps rotate or not (the ones on freight cars come off and get lost, PITA). I do care if frame contours and thickness and brake and spring detail is right. I would be deliriously happy if real springs were used. Atlas did it on their Trainmaster starting eons ago, so it can be done. Anyway, letting someone else go first and having modelers critique it can pave the way for better models. If manufacturers pay attention.
