My ultimate goal is to model a particular place and time. I want the elements of locomotives, freight cars, location, and the consist as a whole to all fit coherently. Last week, with the arrival of a better camera, I made a railfan video on my layout to see how that was coming along.

Last week, with the arrival of a better camera, I made a railfan video on my layout to see how that was coming along. Nice! I'm from nearby (long ago!) and you've captured railroads running below the bluffs very well. Special thanks for you resisting adding annoying music to the video. I watched the whole thing without screaming!

Thanks for posting the video Tim. Always nice to see trains and scenes fitting a time and local!

I'm getting really close to the finish line on this UP ex-Rock Island caboose, based on a photo I found on Fallen Flags: In Manny's caboose build thread the subject of interiors came up. This Walthers caboose had an interior but I rearranged it and added a new stove. Of course you can't see it, but here it is anyway: And here's where this model was a little over a year ago:

Bringing this thing along.........Big Stinky Alco. So far it's had some acrylic washes and here I'm starting to pick out the panels and make oil stains using MIG Track Wash, long way to go!

How did you accomplish the overspray to be so straight? Funny, it just looks crooked to me! I drybrushed the oil paint where I wanted it then defined the edges by scraping lightly with a knife. When it cures fully I'll go back and soften the overspray patterns a little more but try to keep the edges.

Well we skipped last Sunday for some reason so I'll start us off this weekend with some Chessie System Era stuff Hello Matt, thanks for your submision this week! I don't model the Chessie System, but during a trip to the LHS I found four Athearn blue box GP40-2s decorated for Chessie System with B&O, C&O, WM, and B&O GM50 reporting marks. I didn't reall have a need for these units, but they were all powered and only $24.88 each! I won't go all out on these units with all the details, but I will probably add the basics.
Thanks, Donnell

Here's a not-so-recent update of one of the MANY project I have under construction, a BNSF 'Smurf' GP38-3 #2051. Athearn used their GP38-2 model to reproduce this locomotive, however, the prototype actually rebuilt from a GP40. So, I ended up backdating the model as much as I could without major reconstruction.

I presume this is the result of your inspiration you mentioned in the other thread. Needless to say, the RI caboose looks great. Good use of your shapeways parts incl the beautiful Vapor Caban stove. The weathering and your use of the airbrush are tops. Good project using the basic Walthers car without having to do major surgery. I do have to ask though, may I see a photo of the underframe at this stage or is that section digital camera shy?

Here's the underside: I added the printed battery box and brake rigging parts, replaced the draft gear with Moloco parts and of course swapped out the trucks with printed Rockwell trucks.

What are those trucks? They make the model. They are some Rockwell high speed trucks I printed in 2016. They were the first trucks I designed for printing so it was a learning experience. Once I had these trucks I knew I could build this caboose, so the project started way back then with a trip to El Reno, Oklahoma to visit the prototype. Of course now I can't unsee the missing embossed panel on the roof. I think this last batch of Rock Island cabooses were the only ones to not have a blank roof panel were the smokejack is located. Here's what the trucks looked like after I cleaned them and shot them with some primer shortly after they came in the mail:

I was so focused on that UP caboose this past week I forgot I also did a few other things. This Accurail covered hopper was lettered for CNW before I modified the jack pads and replaced the outlet gates. It's based on a photo I took in North Dakota in 1991, but it still needs to be weathered: And this one is ready for decals. And a motor and drivetrain and weight because it's light as a feather.

Tim, thanks VERY much for this. My only rides on the IC were on the electrics within Chicago in 1967 and from Chicago to Champaign and back in 1970, and my only time in Iowa was on the Southwest Chief eastbound from KC ca. 1986, but I've also seen Kalmbach's articles and videos showing the upper Mississippi Valley (which I've seen in Minnesota and Wisconsin), and what you've done looks authentic and beautifully done. Inspiring.

I’ve assembled and changed some decals on some IMRC PS 4750s: In the process of doing those, I got rid of the pin they used for the coupler box, and countersunk a 2-56 1/8” screw. Soo much better. And more decals. This time some Atlas Thrall 4750s Checked out a hobby shop about an hour and a half away with some fellow club members/friends as kind of a last hurrah before I start my cyber security school (won’t have time to actually go to the club during meeting hours). Found this BN SD9. According to prototype photos, Need to add 3 pane all weather windows, a model designation plate, an ACI plate, and maybe adjust the pilot (no pointy bit in the middle). Already ordered a loksound and speaker for it. Ya I didn’t take the foam bits off yet. It’s 6139.

Bringing this hopper closer to completion only to be followed by many more of the same variety. I really need some heavy Vulcan trucks to model some of the later classes as the Kadee Vulcan trucks represent a lighter design.

Had to look up a prototype pic of that car. Interesting, especially with the low height.
I've had requests for Vulcan trucks and RSC3 trucks with gearboxes that'll swap on a RS3. You Seaboard guys....

How do you make your cut levers and the brackets? The DA ones are getting hard to find.

Here is a small bit of my learning resin casting from the other week. With these I can add draft key detail to any car that happens to be missing it. Here is the Kadee Hydro cushion 40 underframe with the draft keys added. The Kadee kit cars are darn near perfect as is but a couple of small details can really make it pop. Now if the humidity would just take a break here for a couple of days I could get some painting and weathering done.

Donnell, looing good. Curious, whose ditch light castings are those? Bob The ditchlights castings are from Detail Associates. They are mounted on brackets made from styrene, thaough I can't remember the thickness. I drilled a hole in the bottom of the bracket, offset from the center (I think) in order to mount them more easily on the anticlimber. The rest of the pilot detail will be a mixture of scratchbuilt and Details West parts.

Thanks Donnell. Sounds like the same approach I took several years ago on an Atlas GP38. Drill up from the bottom for SMD LED attached with magnet wire. Bob edit: for some reason my image won't load from Google?
