Well, it looks like BNSF is sorta creating some heritage units to commemorate their 25th anniversary. Here are the 10 units that are getting repainted (ES44AC's): BNSF 5872 BNSF 5828 BNSF 5869 BNSF 6017 BNSF 6022 BNSF 6075 BNSF 6078 BNSF 6111 BNSF 6163 BNSF 6179 Photos posted BNSF's Facebook page: First unit enters service tomorrow, with the others following. I believe they will all be the same. I'll be honest, I feel like it's a bit of a swing and a miss. A missed opportunity. With so many interesting schemes from their predecessors, it would have been really easy to use those as a base for tribute schemes (akin to Norfolk Southern's units). Oh well, at least it's a little different. -Kevin

Lame, very very lame. NS knows how to do it right, and that's why they're one of my favorite railroads.

NS "did it right" only very briefly while they had a railfan CEO. They are long since under new management, and the last two years or so have been...interesting to say the least. Plus BNSF still has dozens of locomotives in original BN and ATSF paint, even though most of those paint jobs are 30+ years old at this point. That's not too common to see on Class I railroads. Perhaps those are the real BNSF heritage units?

If you watch any live feed rail cam that features BNSF you will see real heritage locomotives from time to time.
I've even seen BNSF GP30u on the Santa Fe Junction cam.. I'm not sure what those '30s are but, they're mighty handsome.
In some ways decals on their heritage locomotives isn't a bad idea.. At least the railfan community won't go completely bunkers like they do when they see a NS heritage unit.

This is sort of what I was expecting them to be. Given the ongoing PSR crusade at BNSF, I’m surprised they were able to afford the extra decals for these.
We should be able to get some good models of these since they are the early ES44ACs that Athearn has.

As a modeler of the area that Pacific Pride I and Pacific Pride II frequented, it doesn't bother me to have ONE (1) loco with decals all over it. I'd probably get a model of the new one just because of that.
But I surely hope copies don't follow.
A problem is gonna be if they want to be fair and split the 9 following paint jobs fairly-ish. That would be 5 for the BN side (BN, GN, NP, SP&S, CB&Q)(Frisco left out). What would the 4 schemes in ATSF be? I get three: Red warbonnet, Blue warbonnet, and the old zebra black. I REALLY want to see that last scheme on a modern diesel, by the way. Maybe the fourth scheme would be the freight cat-whisker--someone has suggested that already.
Of course, it could be argued that there's no need for the BN and the two warbonnet schemes, since there's still some running. Might just repaint THOSE in their same older schemes. I rather like that idea.
Also of interest, at least to me, would be whether they went the conservative route and painted the engines in a similar style to the originals, or went the UP route, and got creative. I think the UP ones are gorgeous, but would never complain at a proper recreation of the old graphic layouts.

I think we should hire who ever created the heritage schemes for NS. I have yet to see their equal

NS's Heritage schemes are basically the predecessor line schemes on a new diesel.
NS also should probably add a Delaware & Hudson unit since they run a chunk of that now.

NS also should probably add a Delaware & Hudson unit since they run a chunk of that now. That ship has sailed; the new leaner, meaner NS would probably rather pretend the heritage units don't even exist.
The last several I have seen were filthy.

BNSF should defnitely create heritage units. Even if it was just a Santa Fe Warbonnet and a BN Cascade or Exexutive it would still be the least they could do.

i think that heritage units in genral are out the window considering psr and many other reasons, and the only reason ns has heariage units is becuase they had a railfan ceo at that time.

Hi All! In order for the railroads to continue requiring licenses for the emblems, schemes etc, they have to be using them. An easy way is to paint several engines as "Heritage Units" using those emblems and schemes. A person in marketing with NS told me that.
