I'm really digging the in-depth build threads being posted right now. Hopefully I'll be able to start one of my own before too long. In the meantime, it is Sunday and I have a few photos to share from the week. I finally got around to building a couple more Norfolk & Western G74 coil gondolas. These aren't a perfect match to the prototype car by any stretch of the imagination, but they are a quick and easy kitbash that looks the part. Here's the first one I did: At the time I built the coil rack I figured I'd go ahead and build two more for when I'd come back to this project later. And here we are, the four Accurail gondolas have been spliced into two: These two just got paint moments ago but they are wet to the touch. Maybe I'll be able to get the decals on later this week. Besides those killer build threads, what's everyone else been up to?

I was thinking about using the same method to kitbash the G73 gondolas as well. Since two gondola kits are required, the extra set of ends could be spliced vertically to make the tall 5-rib ends. The AR and BL corners would need ladders instead of grabs and the bottom row of rivets needs to be shaved off. I'll spring for some undecorated kits next time, though. Not that Accurail cars are particularly difficult to strip or anything, just an extra step.

I didn't have the time to get involved this weekend, but I managed to drill some stanchions from my scrap box every now and then.
After drilling the GP7 ones, the Katos are extremely easy. I had to throw away about every 2nd attempt on the GP7 ones, none with the Katos.

An E7 rolls past Joliet Yard with an eastbound Dummy. Exited the comfort zone and started on basic scenery. Discovered that I hadn't ballasted track since 1991 and things certainly have changed. What a learning curve. Here's a photo by Greg Garver that shows a similar scene. [/a] Rock Island EMC E6A 630 by Craig Garver, on Flickr

Way late to the party this week...... I managed to finish up the big stinky Alco, not a lot of modeling here, I repainted it as it was in SP colors, otherwise not much was done externally. I wanted this unit to really show the effects of the paint oxidizing and gradually falling off. The process started with painting it into it's original ATSF "Bookend" colors using TCP, it came out very nice and at first I was reluctant to weather the engine - it looked that good! But, these units were pretty beat by the time the UTAH got them so away it went. I did several washes of acrylic blue and yellow craft paint followed by a wash of rust colored oil from Abteilung 502. There's abit of chalk on the walkways, and the oil stained doors were done with Testors Modelmaster Exhaust, finally I did some detail pick out with a silver colored pencil. Here it is just after being painted, the blue is so dark it's almost black.

Tbird1958, your engineer is not going to be able to get out that back cab door.

No, I'm thinking of the cars in NW series 189750-190499 built in 1976. The row of rivets along the floor and on either side of the side stakes are some of the features that set the G73 apart from the G72 series you linked.
