Drooling over those Newsprint cars, Slowfreight. I have two of them that I "upgraded" with Plano cross platforms and decal/weathering work, but they really need to be lowered and better draft gear added. I also have a pair of them new in box, never opened that I scored on Ebay for $25 each earlier this year on a Buy it Now before anyone noticed.
Interesting cars in model railroading as a whole as they seem similar to other "modern" designs offered around the same time with neat features, but somewhat clunky by today's standards; Athearn's PS 5344, Branchline's Berwick outside braced 50', and these P1K Newsprint cars...

I have one of those newsprint cars. How does lowering in and changing the draft gear affect the coupler height? I’m thinking of maybe using the 1 DW draft gear kit I have on it

I’m thinking of maybe using the 1 DW draft gear kit I have on it Lowering it is what lead to changing the draft gear. The stock draft gear assumes the too-high ride height. The kit you have should be fine, because the floor height nets out just fine with a Kadee coupler gauge once the body is lowered.

Meanwhile, due to Tom's bad influence I have upgraded all 10 of my P1K newsprint cars Nice! They do look a lot better riding at the correct height don't they?! Here is my car that perhaps started it all! -Tom
