Thought I'd start off with a couple of cars I recently picked up at hobby shop in my travels. FCRD 330 is a stock Athearn RTR model with only Kadee 158s and some weathering added. The FCRD patch out is actually too new for the late 90s I model, but I didn't realize that when I bought it.
BM 79005 is also an Athearn RTR car but in addition to the weathering I added air hoses, Tangent cut levers and Moloco draft gear.

A couple of simple weathering project with Exactrail cars. Oils and colored pencils Starting a Berwick 7440, these cars had a wavey panel effect similar to Pullman Standard cars, I'm starting the process with layers of glosscote and a simple mask along with my Iwata HP-C. Slowly laying track, the long narrow area will eventually represent Soldier Summit, UT. The westbound main is on the left along with a short helper pocket and the switch to the Pleasant Valley branch at the top of the photo. The right side is the eastbound main with a short stub siding and again at the top a short siding that will represent Colton, UT. The track is Micro Enginering weathered flex, switches are Peco and Fast Track. Happy Sunday Mark Hills

Didn't those ExactRail GT waffle boxcars come with the 3 panel stencil? What was the earliest those ran?
Mark, nice to see track getting laid. It will be really nice to run trains!

Finished Proto: rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2804008 This is a Cannon kit bundle, for the 3 people who missed it last week... Proto side: Fantasy side: Decals worked beautifully. Monad is 7 pieces; artwork is bent/folded to flow around the ribs. I'm sure I can complain endlessly that it didn't turn out like I wanted, but it's a great feeling to move a challenging kit to the "done" pile.

I finally got around to finishing some ice reefers for my block that comes off the UP at Omaha. I had the mechanicals pretty well covered but photos and footage indicated I needed more representation from the ice cooled cars. First is an Intermountain R-40-23. I added a couple layers of weathering then patched out a re-weigh, added some chalk marks, and an ACI label to typical practice for my 1969 era. Next is an Intermountain R-40-25 in an earlier scheme. This got heavier weathering and additional patched date to hopefully look as if it has a few more years and miles on it. Finally, since I was weathering some RTR stuff, I attacked my Deco-end boxcar. There were still over 100 of these active according to my 1/70 ORER. It adds a bit of variety to a cut of boxcars. I weathered using a shot of a similarly aged C&O boxcar from 1969 to include paint fade, a bit of paint failure, dirt, and some re-stenciled data and chalk marks. Tim VanMersbergen

Too much time on the road for me lately, so not much modeling this week, but I had a little fun replacing the cast bell on a Details West part with a brass bell:

Here's an undated shot, I'm not great with guessing the date but it's no doubt past the '70s Same series, this shot is date as 2000 an looks the part of a repaint, quite spartan.

Okay, those are something to look at! Care to go over your methods? That rust collection past the door is some of the best I've seen.

Okay, those are something to look at! Care to go over your methods? That rust collection past the door is some of the best I've seen. Thank You! All the products I used on these cars are in this photo minus some pan pastels brushed on the trucks and couplers. Since the FCRD was a primed for grime model and the other one being a white car, neither one needed a fade so I was able to skip that step. The first step was to highlight all the seams and lines with the US Modern Vehicle wash, which is a light brown color, which was then blended and cleaned up with some mineral spirts. As you blend the wash it spreads the brown giving you a nice subtle rust color in the corners and along the ribs, especially on the white car. I lightly wet sanded the "Golden Triangle RR" with some 2000 grit sandpaper to match the wear on some prototype photos of some similar cars. I then brushed on a coat of the subtle dirt filter on both cars making sure to get a nice even coat. I followed this up with a a coat of Tamiya TS-79 semi gloss from the spray can to seal everything in for the next step. I use semi gloss for this step because I find it easier to do the rust streaks on a smooth surface as opposed to using dullcote. To do the rust scratches I use the "chipping" color of the Mig acrylic paint. Using different small brushes I make random scratches and rust spots. On the door I tried to keep it horizontal and in the places where the door would be most damaged from opening. It's best to work off a photo, in this case I actually had a photo of one side of the Guilford car, but the FCRD I used photos of other cars in the series. The FCRD car had those small rust spots along the bottom that I replicated with a small sponge, like the grey foam that came in Athearn blue box kits, that I pulled small pieces off to make the surface more random. I used that to dab on the paint, rotating the sponge to keep the pattern changing. To do the streaking, I paint the rust effect over whatever rust spots I want to streak and then pull the product down where I want the streak to go. I then clean and blend them with a brush damp with mineral spirts. The final step is to seal everything in with a coat of dullcote.

Sponge! Awesome. I also use Mig and have really enjoyed the products thus far. Your cars have such a nice solid look to them, nothing stark to draw eyes off the consistent weathering. Thanks much for the detailed response.

Rick Jesionowski I did get a couple of the green spartan DT&I waffles. But since I was interested in the blue GT logo waffles tried to find out more about them being that sometimes they represent an earlier scheme with a 3 panel stencil applied later around 1982+. I had the impression that this model represented a car GT repainted in the early 80's and was therefore a bit too late for my interests. If the GT logo car was a 1973 paint scheme in actuality, I'll try to hunt one down and restincil it like Mark did.

Jim, these cars were from the DT&I, and the GTW purchahed the DTI from the PC estate in 1980. So the earliest the would have been GT blue is 80. Bill

Bill Yep, Bill is correct, I neglected to see the GT car was the DT&I number with a 1 added when it went to the GT. T-Bird will have to removed the old COTS label and put on a new one as these cars never had the single panel COTS. Rick Jesionowski

Rick Jesionowski I did a little looking into the GT logo 60' waffles to see if they were good for earlier than 1982, but thought I had read somewhere that they went to GT aroudn that time (1982), hense the 3 panel stencil. I know some models are actually good for earlier but the manufacturer put 3 panel stencils on them but they can be back dated. That kind of goes against traditional decorating as usually the manufacturer lables the car consistent with when they were built. (i.e. what ever labeling (ACI, single panel, 2 panel, 3 panel etc. was current when built).

GTW took over DT&I in 1981, and freight cars were remarked then repainted, I don’t think you’ll find any of the 60ft waffles repainted before 1985.
