I bought an Athearn F89F that was in the yellow scheme with 2-panel COTS. Turns out it has hitches for either 2 40’ trailers or 3 28’ trailers. I’m curious when 28’ trailers came out as I may have to attempt surgery to plug the holes for the other hitches.

My notes say 28' trailers were introduced in the sixties.
Sounds like you have an RTTX car. Which was pretty much designed for the 28' trailers.
The trailers preceded the flats.
If you "plug the holes for the other hitches", you'll have to reletter the car, too.

I would have thought an RTTX with hitches for 3 x 28' trailers would have a 3 panel stencil. Checkint TTX history page: Modification of 89-ft and 89-ft 4-inch hitch cars to Twin-45/Triple-28 configuration begins. The 3 panel stencils predated the modification.

RTTX's started in 1985.
XTTX's started in 1966.
Both were designed to carry 3 28' trailers.
