Oh man, I miss some of the IHC stuff. Their GG1 ran quite well (dual motors). Who are you using for your 3D prints?

I am using Shapeways for this kind of stuff. Parts that you do not see, do not need to have a perfect surface finish.

Today I received my decals for this project. You can barely see the white artwork that is for the frame. Now I only need the 3D printed parts and I can finish this project.
Here I have built the ladders or at least one set. I used the ladders from an AHM tank car, cut them and formed them to fit. Both sets are now done.
The ladders are installed to make sure it all fits properly. I had to re-drill the holes in the frame so the vertical run was straight. On the left end of the frame I have installed a Tichy brake staff ratchet.

Today I received my 3D designs from Shapeways and got busy installing all the parts. The new bolsters are installed now. I had to make one minor modification to the design to get them to fit. After close inspection of the cavities in the frame I noticed the bottoms were angled. So I cut the angle into the legs that fit into those cavities and all fit like a glove. The tubes you see coming off the new bolsters to the right of the model are actually the bolster pins.
Prior to installing the bolsters, I cut off the bolster pins. The pin holes in the frame have a chamfer molded into them. I matched this chamfer in the design. After cutting the pins off and trimming the length, the pins fit into the pin holes and seated perfectly against the chamfer.
The model comes with truck mounted couplers. This required me to design a new draft gear box. Here you can see them installed. The inside cavity for the coupler was made the same width as the pints on the coupler shank. The widest part of the coupler. This naturally would cause a tight interference fit. This was planned so I could keep a narrow draft gear box. The make the coupler swivel freely was a very simple modification to the coupler points. Just file a couple thousandths off each point. This worked out very well. The coupler used is the Kadee scale head medium center shank.

I'm pretty excited to see how model building is going to be in this century. A fifty-year-old tank car + CAD and a 3D printer.

I have added the necessary weight to bring the cars total weight on the rails up to 4 oz. The center slab weight is the original weight that came with the car. I added weight with BB's and white glue. I divided the BB's evenly on each side of the center slab weight. The brake wheel is from Kadee and the staff is a piece of 0.020" bronze wire. The hazmat placards are from Detail Associates. The car is now ready to be grit blasted and painted.

To prep the model for paint, everything has been grit blasted with 200 grit aluminum oxide shot at 40 psi. Then all the parts were washed in warm water and blown dry with the air compressor. Only one model is shown, but both models are now ready for a primer coat of paint.

The model is now painted and has a gloss clear coat ready for decal application. My favorite gloss is Alclad Aqua Gloss. It cures super hard for a great protective coating. Great for putting decals over too.
These are the colors I used. For the green color, I added just a touch of the blue and for the cream color, I added just a touch of yellow to white. I do not like the Vallejo paints. I had them on hand and used them, but I will not anymore. I will use either Tamiya or True Color. All my Vallejo will go in the trash.

The decals have been applied. These are my own artwork and printed by Highball Graphics. Final assembly will be done after I apply a clear coat to protect the decals and then apply a satin finish for my weathering base. I still have to glue the platform and ladders in place. By tomorrow evening, the second car will be done with decals as well.

That's a really sharp looking build Brian!!! Love to see how you approach the weathering and finish this one off. Hey BTW I'm an avid follower of your YouTube build segments. You always seem to have something of interest up your selves, any chance we'll see the completion of your recent SD-45, C-424/25, C-415 & PS-2 cover hopper project's to the end? Good luck and I'll stay tuned.

Alex, thanks for taking the time to watch my videos. I do appreciate it.
The SD45 project is in limbo right now. After the side frame debacle, my motivation to work on it crashed hard. I had a real good motivation to work on it before that happened. I do not know when I will get back to it.
The C415 project is in design hell right now. It is at a point where I need to find one of these in the real world so I can go measure some stuff on it. Mainly the pilot plates and step wells. I did get some 3D printed stanchions done and they turned out OK. A little refining and they would be fine.
The C425 project is slow. Very slow. I have two more truck side frame to build. One to do off camera and the last one will be built on camera. I just need to get to that.
The PS-2 hoppers are done. You can see photos of them in a thread here called A few freight cars I have finished this year. You can also see them on my Flickr page. All my finished stuff will be on my Flickr page
I have a number of projects in boxes that I have not shared. One that I am building for a friend you might be interested in seeing. By your username, I take it you like EL stuff. My friend is an EL modeler too and I am building a GP35 for him. Nothing fancy. He wants it as a club runner, but since he is not an equipment modeler. He asked if I would build it for him. I have been working on it for about two years now. It is a project I work on when he comes over for our Modeling Night. I only have the cab and hood to finish.
As for my projects. There is no guarantee that I will finish them. I have not finished a locomotive in over two years now. My focus now is these freight cars. I have almost 50 of them done now. I do have to get some motive power done though for my freelanced railroad because I do not have any finished motive power to pull my trains. Well, I do have the two EJ&E units, but they are five years ahead of my era so I do not run them. So my current goal is to get a simple five unit set done so I have something to pull my trains. Nothing special, skimpy on details and nothing to write home about.

Thanks for the updates Brian....but I feel bad for your EL friend having to wait two years for that EL GP-35 build!!!! Please post your finished work on this, yes i'm definitely into EL stuff.
Thanks for sharing
