Guys, Yesterday I finally finished detailing these two Walthers Mainline low nose GP9s in Montana Rail Link paint. The parts I added are: grabirons, steps, winterization hatch, lift rings, firecracker antenna, horn, mu hoses, airhose, mu cable, coupler lift bars and ditch lights. Walthers MRL GP9s by Cornelius Koelewijn, on Flickr Walthers MRL GP9s by Cornelius Koelewijn, on Flickr Personally I think Walthers offers quite a nice model. It even has see thru steps. I used the Walthers additional detail set. Strangely enough this doesn't contain coupler lift bars, so I bought the Cal Scale metal coupler lift bars. The models probably aren't 100 percent correct, but to me they look great. BTW, does anybody know if the big all weather window is available as a detail part? Cornelius.

Athearn RTR boxcar I just finished weathering. Managed to get some shots outside this morning before the rain hits.

That boxcar looks great. The roof... nice. I weathered my Arrowhead Railgon the other day and took some photos this morning.

Working on weathering a Kadee WM boxcar. Even though most of the color will probably be weathered away, I think the oxide red underframe will do a lot to bring this car to life.

Ive managed to finish one of my Exactrail Berwick 7440's, I kept the weathering pretty light as this car would only be about 3 years old on my timeline. A little simulated panel wave with chalks, dullcote and glosscote for the sides. The roof got a little overspray along with some thin gray to dull the silver, finished with some oil washes and MIG Track Wash. Quite a bit of progress on the Cannon B70-30, the underframe, both ends and one side are complete, it should make it to the paint booth this week......I couldn't resist and alreay got some color on the frame. Have a good Sunday, Mark Hills

20201109_215455 by wp8thsub, on Flickr I completed my Moloco PC&F boxcar kit as an SP class B-70-10R. As with my last SP cars, I painted it TruColor Colorado & Wyoming Freight Car Brown. While finishing it, I also weathered my Arrowhead Railgon at left.

Working on weathering a Kadee WM boxcar. Nice work Adam! So the underframe should be oxide red? Was that standard for WM boxcars? Also, I’ve seen photos that show the trucks on some cars were black and on others red. I’ve got all three road numbers Kadee produced for this B24 class, just missing the ones that were done special for the WM historical society. Also planning on painting up Kadee undecorated cars #5999 & #6700 for WM classes B20 and B21. B20 show below. Have yet to find a good photo of a B21 class. Thanks, Mark

Curious, what did you use for ditch lights and do you happen to have a photo showing those installed.

Put together this load for a wheels of time flat I fixed up and weathered (may make the weathering a bit heavier later) Started detailing up this Athearn GN PC&F boxcar: Currently car now sports Moloco draft gear and Kato barber S-2 trucks (unsure if correct) Here’s a prototype photo for comparison: I might try oils on this car, I bought some after reading an RMC article involving a PC car. Just a bit nervous about trying new things.

A few years ago, I found out that CN was buying older 8-40CW units and putting them into service. I had also photographed one of the LMS units when I was younger. I thought about just getting a pair of old Bachmann Spectrum units, painting them up and throwing them on the lead of an intermodal freight. That thought didn't last very long as I kept hearing things about problems with the units. I also couldn't afford Atlas at the time, so I almost gave up. A few days later, a gentleman posted that he had two Railpower 8-40CW kits, with chassis, trucks, and etched parts for sale...for $20. I couldn't say no. A few days later, they arrived...and I was happy with everything but the cabs and the horrible attempt at hinges and lift rings on the shells. The cabs were terrible...so I went to the Atlas parts department and got some nice cabs normally used for a 8-40BW (they work just fine). The hinges and lift rings were replaced with parts from Detail Associates. Decals came two weeks later from the same gentleman who sold me the locomotives. It's taken me years to get to this point...mostly due to having to find parts and working through other units I've been working on, but we're almost there. Motors (and eventually DCC decoders to run all of the nice ditch lights) will be added shortly. There are a few spots to touch up and weathering has to be done. But, here they are...
Beautiful work by everyone this week. I truly enjoy seeing what everyone is doing to keep busy during these crazy times. Timothy Dineen

Mark, As far as PS cars go, I can tell you these '65 cars had red trucks and underframes, while the '66 cars had black trucks (as well as unpainted roofs.) I want to say earlier PS cars also had red, but I haven't dug into the photos yet to determine that. Same goes for most other boxes- not sure yet. WM practice for repaints was to do everything (often including couplers!) in red. The ACF Precision Design cars all had black trucks. There are some builders photos of those other PS cars at freight.railfan.ca Thanks for the compliment!

Super weathering being shown here today. Here's my contribution, prototype operates out of Lewisburg Tennessee USA: IMHO, you nailed the appearance of this caboose. My son and I took a trip down to Lewisburg, TN the later part of this summer partly so that I could get photographs of the prototype as I have the same model to do at some point. The only thing that you missed (and please don't take this as criticism) is that now appears to have been the subject of a paintball attack, judging from the small white "splatters" on one side of it. I am just in awe that Tangent chose this specific model to do since it is nearly in my backyard and that I photographed it around 15 years ago on another of CSX's branches in the Middle TN area.

I assembled the individual pieces and sprayed them with krylon satin almond. Then assembled it using 1/64” and 1/32” chart-pak tape and CA (tape doesn’t seem to stick real well). Then one the whole thing was done I sprayed it with krylon matte finish

Cornelius, nice "upgrade" on the Geeps. Curious, what did you use for ditch lights and do you happen to have a photo showing those installed. TIA. Bob Hi Bob, They're Detail Associates LT 1027. I used the round lights only. As they are styrene, I simply glued them to the pilot of the engine, painted them black and added some silver paint for the light. I checked some pix of MRL GP9s and there seem to be quite some differences in ditchlights. So it's a good idea to check out the road# you want to model. P.S.: is it getting more difficult to find detail parts? Not even Walthers had these ditch lights in stock. Luckily a friend of mine had some leftovers. This is a picture before painting:

Sure, I am likely going for more the 2005 appearance when I first photographed it in Brentwood, TN: CSXT 900064 by James Bilbrey, on Flickr But, here is the same caboose taken 2020 in Lewisburg, TN. ^ Thanks James! It looks like someone threw buckets of paint on the sides as the size of the splatters appear quite large for paintball. I will try replicating this.

You're welcome; I am glad that someone could make use of the photos. I haven't been back down that way to see if the white paint had washed off, so I would be cautious about adding that paint detail and risk ruining what you have done before. Another detail, which was hidden in the photo that I took, was a light blue FRED on the B-end of the caboose.
