This morning I finished weathering my latest project....a Penn Central, Fruit Growers Express 40' plug door boxcar. The car started as a 50' Branchline plug door boxcar that I cut 5' off from each end. I shortened the 50' underframe, added a shortened Moloco roof, and Athearn ASF trucks. This kitbashed car ends up very close to the FGE car. The above photo shown the modified underframe, Basically the bolsters and coupler pockets were added then the middle part of the underframe was shortened and then added. The resulting model really fits in for my mid 70's era railroad. I am currently working on another one but this time it will be a Penn Central FGE boxcar painted in the earlier FGE paint scheme.....ends are red and the sides have the FGE stripes. The car was painted in the later era simplified FGE scheme (Penn Central leased these cars). I thought lettering these cars would be easy as Microscale makes a FGE set but I did not think that they were accurate enough. I did find an old Champ set that while the data was too generic the FGE lettering looked pretty good, I used that but made the rest of the decals myself. I did modify the Branchline ends to resemble the FGE ends by sanding off the top indention then added rounded 2"x4" styrene. I forgot to mention but I painted the car with MEC orange that I added some yellow to.

Very nice work! I'll also be interested in seeing your second when you are done.
I like how you dated the underside of the car.

Very nice and subtle, so many people weather the crap out of models but it is the more subtle weathering that looks the nicest on the average to me.

Excellent kit bash and detailing job, particularly liked the ends.

Tom - I think I mentioned this a while back on the old Atlas Forum in reference to one of your models, but it bears repeating. This is one of those kitbashes that is so well done that, even though it's totally out of my era, it makes me want to try to build one myself. I always think that, for me personally, that's the mark of a great model - it makes everyone else want to have one too. Thanks for sharing another great project!

I'd like to echo everyone else's comments. What a great model. It's nicely done models from the 70s era like this one that have pushed me to fill out my 80s roster with some classics from the 60s and 70s like this.

Thanks everyone! This car shows why kitbashing is still a method sometimes still required to get a model that you may want.
Atlas Trainman is planning on producing a similar model but with molded on detail. For the cost and the better detailing I will stick with the kitbashed Branchline car!
