Cut and PasteSeveral years ago, Jim Kinkaid posted a good portion of his collection of builder's and other freight car photos to the Photos area of the Modern Freight Car List, while that listing was available as a Yahoo Group. Subsequently, Yahoo abandoned support of Groups and most groups migrated messages, etc. to the Groups.IO platform.
The Modern Freight Car List made that transition, but there was no means to transfer the large collection to the new platform. Jim Kinkaid and MFCL owner, Jim Eager sought another means to make this useful collection more generally available. In 2019 Jim Kinkaid agreed to donate portions of his collection to the Pullman Library of the Illinois Railway Museum. As an advance, he has provided electronic copies of the freight car collection and we are pleased to offer them for view and download via this site. The files have been organized alphabetically by railroad reporting marks.

I saw it posted on the MCFL io.groups recently too. Should be a great resource. That "showroom" photo is pretty cool!

There is a similar photo collection for the American Car & Foundry over on Flickr, but the photos in that album tend to be from the first half of the Twentieth Century: ACF album - Barriger National Railroad Library
One can spend hours on both of those links and still feel like you have only scratched the surface.

I have spent a few nights going through these. Really thankful to see such a collection.
My personal highlight was the vast amount of Greenville photos. I visited Greenville, PA a few years ago, and went to try and find the ground where GSCCo once was. For those unaware, there is still a Trinity complex to the South side of town. One would surmise that would have been GSC, but there is also a plot of land that is in a suspicious spot with rail paths visible from aerial shots. I had long figured that it was the former plant, but these photos have proven it without a doubt. Another question answered.

That Barriger collection is a real great place to “waste” an evening or two now and then.
