I’m a Model Railroader who has relapsed back into the hobby after about a 30-year hiatus. Re-joining the hobby was a bit like a Rip Van Winkle experience. SO much has changed! I thought I might start the Sunday Photo Phun with a few models I did back in the 1980’s or before. I had a wonderful opportunity to visit W. Allen McClelland’s first Virginian & Ohio railroad back in the 1970s and I was smitten by what I observed. My own modeling was clearly influenced by that experience. I was building my own Susquehanna & Western at that time and its motive power liveries were very much shaped by the V&O. So here are a few photos of models from forty-some years ago. Why did I put that bell on the roof of the Alco? Who knows, guess i thought it looked cool.

Why did I put that bell on the roof of the Alco? Who knows, guess i thought it looked cool. Nice models! The bell on the roof is not nearly as crazy of an idea as you may think, nearly all of CN's GMD and MLW cab units had the bell on the roof because it was far less likely to get plugged up with snow up there.

snip "I finally got the correct trucks for the these from Tangent, but I discovered the screw head could pass through the hole in the Tangent truck without securing the truck to the carbody. "
Ryan, I discovered this same thing a couple years ago. The thing was the screws on the factory Tangent cars have a slightly larger diameter head. David even sent me replacements - same problem. My solution to the problem was to use some #2 SS washers. The fit perfectly in the truck, and then the Tangent screws work.

Here's a 'quick and dirty' project from me this week, a Walthers ES44AC I'm working on. The detail kit Walthers puts out for these is a huge time saver, and includes all of the grab irons plus cut levers for each end. Other than that, I removed and blanked over the first dynamic brake vent on each side behind the cab to match the prototype, added MU hoses, spare knuckles on the rear, a Hi-Tech details GPS dome, and replaced the numberboards with Details West parts as I feel Walthers made them a little undersized. All that's left to do is add the windshield wipers, and do the rest of the touch up painting.

I'm doing my last building project for a while- 15 WM shanties. I had only ever bought 3 kits for them, so I had to cut 12 more.

Altho I used Green and White in honor of my alma mater, Michigan State, the major influence on my freight power is also the V&O. McClelland's railroad and state of good enough-ness has guided me thru-out my modeling efforts for ~40 years. My pics also show the folly of using photographs to pin all your hope of a color's accuracy, all my Alco's shown are exactly the same color Southern Railway Green, different camera and lighting make the difference in appearance.
