Details of which models in first Atlas release to come in the next couple of months, they have some paint scheme licenses and are working on others.

Mr. Haedrich said the firm already has a license from the MBTA and, I think, also West Coast Express.

Atlas expands further into the commuter rail modelling market. For these two MBTA units, meh.
My wallet is safe until Rapido does more MBTA F40PHs or someone does an accurate GP40MC.

Chicago Metra units maybe? Of course without Nippon Sharyo cars the locomotive doesn't do us much good! Maybe Kato will step up on that.

Don’t forget MARC! I held off when TLT produced them, but I’d got for a MARC unit from Atlas just to have one example of a MARC diesel. I don’t think we’re going to see a GP40WH-2 model anytime soon.

has to be better than the TLT one. Is it in their Master Line?

has to be better than the TLT one. Is it in their Master Line? Wouldn't this be the TLT tooling but upgraded? Nice to see a very common prototype coming back to the market. I was lucky enough to snag the NMRX one on clearance, but I know many folks didn't get the chance when these were first available.

The pre-recorded video by Atlas gave no indication about the tooling (all new, TLT, or upgraded TLT), just that the MP36 was coming with more details in the next couple of months.

Great excuse to start a new thread—-or watch this one explode in pages of speculative content in the next couple of months. Nice model to make, sure many will enjoy it when it arrives.

It's likely the TLT MP36 tooling Atlas acquired along with a bunch of other TLT tooling (apparently also including the TLT PSC cabeese), which means they probably have the GO Transit MP40 tooling as well...

When Atlas initially announced they had acquired some of the TLT tooling the MP36/40 was missing from the list of items purchased (the only HO locos listed were the C-Liner and RS18)
This has meant periodic speculation since then about the fate of the MP36/40 tooling.
As I noted, Atlas didn't say anything in their video today (and I made that posting just for clarity for anyone who hasn't seen the video which was restricted to those who registered for the virtual train show).
Now, do I think Atlas has tooled up a new model? No. There are certainly indications that the model helped to contribute to the downfall of TLT - they pondered the idea of tooling up the HSC / UTDC / Bombardier Bilevels to increase sales back when TLT first did the loco, and Rapido in the end resorted to actually tooling up new Bilevels to boost sales of their F59PH). So given the struggles to sell models of both of those commuter locos (and with say a couple of thousand MP36/40 models already existing) I can't see anyone having been in a hurry to spend the money on all new tooling. But until Atlas says anything it is all guesswork/speculation.

Was hoping for a P30, but an MP-unit seems like a good move. There are quite a number of modern commuter rail modelers on other forums and FB that will likely be happy with the announcement.

Speaking of those Rail Runner units.. a rerun would be nice, I'd love that! Just because it's a really great scheme and all, not because I model anything remotely near that area.

I'd get the marc version but like the road runner paint job I found over on the wikipedia entry on the topic. Be kinda fun. I assume the passenger cars will appear as well. It starting to add up dang it.

I was hoping for an Atlas NJT ALP-46, or LIRR DE30AC, but I'm glad it's the MP36/40. Can never have enough commuter locomotives. Hopefully this time around I can grab a MARC & VRE model.
Now, just need someone to announce Nippon Sharyo or Budd Bilevels.

It starting to add up dang it. Athearn did the cars and a foobie F59 when RailRunner first started up. The cars are the mish-mash design that's not correct for anyone, but since NMRX originally commissioned them the paint job is very accurate. I picked up the 3-pack of cars many moons ago. A 2-car train was very appropriate in the early years, so it's an easy train to model.

I bought a couple 3-packs of the Athearn NMRX cars and two NMRX F59s back when tbey were available generally. Sold off the F59s on eBay when I was able to get the True Line Trains MP36s. I had the feeling that NMRX might have had tbe Athearn items in its gift shop at some point, because upon listing the F59s I kept getting queries, "Do you HAVE these?" -- people seeming to think a supply had somehow become available again. And suggesting a demand for them. Well, in New Mexico, at least ...
BTW, I haven't ridden the train, but I understand the automatic doors make a "MEEP! MEEP!" Roadrunner sound when they open and close.

After the first run from Athearn, Trains West in Albuquerque commissioned a run of about 750 sets direct from Athearn, and it was the best selling single item they ever carried. Nobody seemed to care that the F59 was a foobie.

Lots of people ran the GO versions of the Athearn bilevels and they were foobies as well.
Which just proves that most of the market only cares about either what they like, or if it is in the general ballpark of accuracy.

Just because Jim repeated it several times in today's Athearn Train Tuesday, for those wanting specific commuter cars to go along with an MP36 make your desires known to the manufacturers so they can judge demand/interest (and no, posts on online forums don't count).
Last summer Matt (then of Athearn, now Rapido) expressed an interest in looking into the idea of doing the Budd gallery cars so Athearn may have some research to build on if they think there is enough demand to make it viable (Rapido might be an option too, but the Bombardier cars might be all the commuter risk they are willing to take at the moment).

Yes, Atlas purchased this tooling. All of it, other than the Minibox. While they certainly could have modified the tooling, that won’t be evident until they are released or they say something. No, the MP-36/40 didn’t “contribute to the downfall” of TLT. These locomotives were very good sellers, and demand was sufficient for another run so I’m not surprised Atlas is running them. If I recall, Rail Runner, Metrolink and MARC took the longest to sell through. I’m happy to see that Atlas is getting around to releasing them. Randy

Can we now attribute Atlas' latest announcement to this one single post of yours? I wish I had that kind of pull with MFGs! If I did, we would have modern BNSF, and Cryo-Trans reefers running around our basements. On a serious note: I never in a million years expected Atlas to announce these cars. Kato Yes, but I guess they didn't want to bother with that cash cow!

Kato Yes, but I guess they didn't want to bother with that cash cow! I spent over a decade trying to convince Kato to do the Nippon Sharyo bi-level cars in HO scale when I worked there. The N scale ones did pretty well. before I moved on to greener pastures, it was (finally) a possible contender, but apparently the once in a blue moon token offering to the HO market was an Amfleet II baggage car so they could keep selling Superliners and non DCC friendly P42's. Glad to see Atlas is making them. It will be a better product. Enjoy! Kelley. www.dufordmodelworks.com

Glad to see Atlas is making them. It will be a better product. Gah, can you imagine the horrible comprimises KATO would make just so it could go around a 15" radius at a million scale miles an hour? * shudders*

I was just looking at the new list prices...crazy how much the world of Chinese manufacturing has changed in 10 years. I think the TLT list was around $190 for DC, and I bought my NMRX unit for $90 on clearance from M.B. Klein in 2014.
