In HO, a run of GP-7's, Coalveyors, 53' Articulated Well Cars, 5701 Covered Hoppers, 40' Refrigerated Containers, 53' Jindo Containers, and Modern Bi-Directional Signals. GP7s include Belt Railway of Chicago, FEC blue with logo, Guilford grey, MEC green, Maryland & Pennsylvania yellow, C&EI, C&EI with Mopac patch, Texas-Mexican, Western Maryland black, BN, Conrail blue (one small lettering, one large), Reading green. 2 numbers each except Ma&Pa. shop.atlasrr.com/d-655-may-2021-asmc.aspx don't be surprised if it times out or gives errors. |

I see N scale is getting Cryo-trans reefers. Does that mean our time is coming soon?

I see N scale is getting Cryo-trans reefers. Does that mean our time is coming soon? Apparently not impossible to get licensing for the Cryo-Trans cars? Makes me think Atlas could be doing N scale, and someone else doing the HO versions. Seems if Atlas was doing HO cars they would have announced them now. Scaletrains maybe? Edit, oops forgot about the BLMA n reefers, so probably just added the Cryo scheme to the BLMA cars? Still, maybe the Cryo scheme can be licensed now? That would be a good thing! |

The April issue of RMC had an article on kitbashing a Texas Mexican GP7 with a short explanation from a former employee. It stated that at the time these units were ordered, road jobs ran with a six man crew. If a single unit was used in yard service, the union agreement required seating for 5 crew members.

Anyone have a good POC at Atlas? I've sent them an email via their contact us page, but believe I'd have better luck with someone who is in the art department or project manager. The C&EI GP7s with a buzzsaw logo and large road numbers on the side of the long hood would be extremely rare - the Mopac started renumbering / re-decaled all of the C&EI locomotives immediately and it took less than 9 months to complete it (May 1967 to March 1968). I've never seen an image of both on the same locomotive. Normally the shop would apply the decal and renumber at the same time. The large numbers were painted over with a new 8" tall road number applied on the long hood side. That would be the paint scheme I'd recommend, but that didn't last a long time either as full repaints started to appear in 1969.

Perhaps because the 5701 is a one size fits all model while the 5250 is offering road specific details and 3 body style variations?

Doesn't the 5701/5800 model come in grain and pneumatic outlet versions? I don't own any of the grain versions so I can't comment on the roof hatch options if any. |

I was just thinking that. There are two versions on the 5701 and 5748/5800. They might be no different than the 5250.
The early pics and comments on this board of the 5250 didn’t show anything special. I’m just not wrapping my head around the price spread between these two.

The saga continues of not getting any scrap gons without con striping. Between the Athearn and Atlas offerings, it's almost comical. Some roll-my-own fodder though, which is increasingly improbable for me.

I think it is the latter. Sort of like when the weatherman predicts a warm and sunny weekend but Saturday and Sunday both turn out cold and rainy. We can't hold them to the "warm and sunny" forecast.

BLMA did do their reefer in N scale, but it's a model of a conventional Trinity reefer built for UP like this one: ARMN 111145The Cryo-Trans cryogenic reefers that Atlas is producing are based on the original Gunderson design, which were all rebuilt in the mid-2000s with an end platform and conventional reefer unit. The rebuilt cars generally look like the ARMN reefers but are not as tall. Here are two of the original Gunderson cars before they were rebuilt: CRYX 1271CRYX 1296Dave |
