I like the finish on those cars and the decals turned out great. Nice work! I've been upgrading some Walthers Airslide hoppers the past couple weeks. This is a drawbarred pair factory painted for Mopac. I had recently acquired an Athearn Airslide so I thought I'd try to get the Walthers cars up to snuff. I thought I had enough stirrups on hand but I was caught short, so those will have to get put on in a couple weeks (this week is high school graduation for my daughters so I don't foresee much modeling going on). The upgrades I made were: Replace the trucks with Kato 70-ton trucks (not a perfect match but good enough until a better truck arrives at my doorstep) Replace the brake reservoirs (printed parts), control valves (Moloco) and handbrake wheels (Tangent) Replace the running boards with Plano parts Replace the grabs with Tangent drop grabs Add 3 ounces weight per car Next to the Athearn car that got the gears turning: It actually didn't turn out too bad. I wish the factory lettering was better, but weathering should help.

Completed a couple of cars this week! Red Caboose, 1937 AAR Boxcar, substituted a Viking Roof (Des Plaines Hobbies), as many of the Van Swearigin Roads used this roof style on their 1937 AAR Boxcars. Yarmounth Models Sill Steps in place of the plastic ones, painted the car with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red #3 and lettered with Speedwitch Media Decals. The completed Intermountain 1958 CF Covered Hopper, painted with Scalecoat II MOW Gray and lettered with Mark Vaughn's decals. In 1956 The M&StL embarked with changing their image with new graphics on their newly acquired freight cars along with repainting some of the old ones. The 1958CF Covered Hoppers were originally delivered in Black with White lettering, the car above was the only known of the original cars to be painted in a modified modern scheme. I showed both sides of the car as the prototype company shops made a slight mistake in lettering the car and I matched what they did. Thanks for looking! Rick Jesionowski

Is that RSD going to be another Utah Rwy diesel? Which scheme? I had recently acquired an Athearn Airslide so I thought I'd try to get the Walthers cars up to snuff. Was that Athearn airslide from a run of the GATC 2600 Airslides? Athearn just released a bunch in GATX, Cotton Belt, D&RGW, BN, PC, UP/WP. They are in the RTR line with an MRSP of $56.98. Many vendors have them for $48. I'm not sure why they aren't in the Genesis line.

Working on some Walthers 54ft Funnel Flow Tankcars for my Conrail CODI/DICO train.(Columbus. OH Buckeye Yard to Dickinson, WV) Had to have custom decals made because no decal maker has Ethylene Oxide placards and Commodity names available. Only saw that train once or twice down at Scioto Tower. Tank cars and chemical traffic dominate carload railroading but are severely under-modeled. Hat's off for your trailblazing...I'm still waiting for more 70's-appropriate tank cars.

Yesterday was a great day at the Union club. I purchased several cars from a fellow member, two of which were weathered, including this Purt Huron & Detroit box as well as a Providence and Worcester. Apart from the truck bolster screws being too tight (which was corrected easily after a minor derailment), they, and all of the other cars I purchased run very well. Up next are two shots of my ScaleTrains Conrail SD40-2s. Apart from the handrails tending to come out (waiting for the canopy glue to dry to keep the front ones in place), they still run and sound very nice. Some day I'll give the rear unit a Lok 5 decoder. Pulling past the Pittsburgh intermodal ramp on their way to Gilberton with a manifest. And, for you Milwaukee guys, here's a clearer shot of that MILW F-unit which was peeking in that second photo:

It looks like the 2600cf Airslides are in the Genesis line now. I have a D&RGW GATC Airslide from about 10 year year ago and it was RTR line but back then there was an odd mix of very detail RTR and others that were pretty basic. I received two of the new run today and they are indeed Genesis boxes.

I can put my own trucks on there (Tangent!) for the cost savings I get from buying the same model in the old RTR box.

I recall that when they moved all the Genesis PC&F 50' RBLs to the RTR line, the only difference was that they left off the cut levers and brake hoses (I think) and put non-rotating roller bearing trucks on them. Other than that, the underframe, ladders, and all the other details were the same. Dave

This is true. You really have to play the long game and wait for the right car to come along if you don't want to overpay. It might take me a year to get one at a price I'm willing to pay. I'm always on the lookout for Athearn acid tank cars and it's not often I'm able to pick them up for a good price, but when I do I feel like all of ebay must have been asleep. My favorite trick for finding them cheap is searching for a misspelling like "Atheran" or "Walters" but those results tend to be in the Tyco quality to blue box quality range. Not many really nice models show up with misspelled names. Another trick I like is to look for a car with an obvious defect, like a popped running board or bent handrail. Those kinds of things are super easy to fix and they can really scare off bidders of all but the most rare of models. I got a CNW Airslide wicked cheap the other day because of a bad roof-to-body joint. I flowed a little Tamiya green bottle liquid cement along the joint and taped it in position with some masking tape. An hour later the problem was solved.

So if your prototype needs body vents, get the Genesis version.

Right. I recall the formerly Genesis PC&F 50' Evergreen single plug door boxcar came out in RTR form - got one. I did manage to pick up a RTR GATC 2600 D&RGW hopper from an earlier run for $16. The bottom sills look bowed out a bit in the middle both side so I need to figure out how to correct that. Might be an assembly issue.
When did the acid tank cars hit the rails that the Athearn car matches? I've noticed a lot of the tank car models seem to be a bit too new for my '77-'83 focus.
