Starting off with a shot taken on the first day of being open to the public at the Union NJ club (yesterday), a pair of Conrail SD40-2s head OISE past the Hudson Delaware & Ohio's truly massive Gilberton yard.

Workbench fun, building a better Greenville '60 Shaving stuff off......... First pass out of the stripper.....Love how the lettering wants to hang on! The fun part, starting to add stuff back, lots of little stuff yet to go here.. Something from 40 years ago this week, I'm at Grassy, UT. with Blair Kooistra, it's 105 degrees with no shade in sight, we're waiting on the RGZ. We anticipated seeing F9 5771 and mates, but it was not to be, the train was late and lead by a GP40-2 that day. happily we caught 5771 several days later on the Front Range. Blair's shot.

I have been tinkering with developing a new Laser Cut Cannon car kit. This is a SCL G-5 Gondola Since I will use this as a example. I painted one side as Delivered, and the other side after a few years of service with re-stenciled reporting marks Still needs a little more weathering Dave Hussey

Happy to buy one when they're ready, I'll finally have two correct Rio Grande Gons at that point. It's hard to believe those shots are from 40 years ago, where the hell does the time go........His pics from back then are spectacular, he's always had a great skill and artist's eye, truly one of the great rail photographers.

91% Isopropyl, that shot was after about 10 minutes, I put it back in for a few more and the lettering came off.

Went off on a Tangent. Actually three of them. MILW 30337 has added decals including new data, chalk marks, journal inspection, ACI, and the "DF2". According to the MILW Color Guide, Morning Sun books, this entire series got belt rails installed in 1965. All the photos I found around my 1969 era had the "DF2" added and reclassification as XL or XML so I did the same. I gave it a Tacoma reweigh of 11-68. GBW 925 got a new re-weigh, journal inspection, and ACI along with weathering. CNW 24149 got updated data, a Clinton re-weigh, ACI, re-pack patch, chalk marks, and weathering. Tim VanMersbergen

Finished up a couple of cars this week. First one is a scale trains airslide. They weren't that beat up in my era so I just gave it a very light fade and coat of road grime. This was my first time working with one of these cars and was surprised by how durable the deatils are. IMG_4900 by cr9617, on Flickr IMG_4898 by cr9617, on Flickr IMG_4896 by cr9617, on Flickr The second is a former Port Huron & Detroit boxcar patched for the Clarendon & Pittsford. I saw the prototype for this car in a Youtube video and it just struck me as something I wanted to model. It's an Exactrail car that I patched with Conrail blue trim film and microscale decals aside from the normal weathering. I wasn't able to find much info so I worked off of the video still and a photo of another car on rrpicturearchive, so it's more of a representation than an exact replica. You guys are crushing it this week! I had just enough time to put this kit together. It's my first Branchline kit and I had a blast building it. I'll have to pick up a few more.

Backdating a couple BLI P70s to approximately as-built cars. The end windows still need frames and some cleanup. And custom decals from Highball Graphics:

Huge dearth of early-CSX-appropriate gons available out there.
If you were to do a non-bulkhead, Chessie Raceland gon kit, I might be forced to build a shrine in your honor. I had planned to scratchbuild a couple over the winter, but I have not found reliable data for the side post spacing, and the ends are a problem. Hint hint.

Ditto, totally in for those gons and a Raceland! Looks spiffy. Great stuff yall, very nice showing. I've been knee deep in modeling via computer, but I have started another hopper project.

Spruced up an Athearn RTR boxcar a bit: I was either lazy or genius and just glued the Moloco cut lever to the bottom of the Athearn bracket. Touch-up paint is Tamiya Hull Red A composite of three photos I took when at my local club. I didn’t do the focus stacking though. I should actually weather my locos but I’m kinda hesitant to at the moment. Not pictured: assembled 2 IM PS4750s, and picked up two Scaletrains SP SD40T-2s (how to justify them and 2 SP GP38-2s in my BN roster?)

Mark, looks like good times chasing trains. I was totally clueless back in those days; I wish I knew about that whole train chasing thing - as least I didn't know how to go about it. I sure am glad there were guys like you and Blair taking photo's back then! When I was in those places, like traveling though Utah and Colorado, I was on my way to take sisters to Aspen CO or on my way to geology field camp and making time to my destination; of course I would have had to know where to go to get photo's and wait for trains.

It's a little off topic but here's a couple of Blair's shot from that trip, we're at Plainview CO. An SD45 and a GP30 with two GP40-2 helper on a westbound. I'd post my shots, but honestly Blair's are much better, I can build models, not so good with the photography. Another west bound stopped at the siding and the crew invited us for a moment to catch the meet with an eastbound, we had to bail off the already moving caboose.

Very cool photos. So that was summer 1981 then?
Wow, so much to see in that plain photo! GS gons, beer RBL boxcars, ADM covered hoppers, SP bulkhead flatcars, 2600 Airslide, etc. I really like the photo's where lots of freight cars are visible.

Yeah, it was 40 years ago this past week, I was 22 at the time, we visited USS steel at Atlantic City, WY and caught their F's, the joint line and to the SE corner of Nebraska to see the last of BN's U25B fleet.

I would have been about the same age having graduated from HS in 77. I dabbled with photography a bit when I was a student a California State University Sacramento and learned out to shoot and develop Extrchrome E6 slides, but never tried shooing trains, something I much regret now. Thanks to folks like Blair we have some great photo's form those times. IIRC, a lot of Blairs photography has been in magazines like CTC Board, Pacific Rail News and the like. Legendary stuff.

Workbench fun, building a better Greenville '60 Excellent work! Carving off molded details is one of my painful modeling obsessions. I somehow enjoy the challenge of improving those older models, but unfortunately rarely finish anything. I'm pretty sure I have one of those old Greenvilles stashed somewhere. A friend pointed out years ago that the model matches an L&N prototype, so I started looking around thinking that maybe some of them had survived into the CSX era, but I don't think I ever found any photo evidence. First one is a scale trains airslide. They weren't that beat up in my era so I just gave it a very light fade and coat of road grime. This was my first time working with one of these cars and was surprised by how durable the deatils are. Love the look of that Airslide! I think that matches how they should look in my era too, but mine may end up a little dustier looking, as I need to use them in bakery service. Both the Tangent and ScaleTrains models are beautiful with incredible detail. We're lucky to have both, including the two sizes that ScaleTrains produced. Spruced up an Athearn RTR boxcar a bit: I was either lazy or genius and just glued the Moloco cut lever to the bottom of the Athearn bracket. Touch-up paint is Tamiya Hull Red That looks great. I have a bunch of those cars that need Moloco upgrades. Thanks for the tip on the Tamiya paint. I know I shouldn't worry about it, but I'm a little obsessive about trying to match colors, even when it's going to be weathered eventually. I'll pick up a bottle next time I'm at the local shop. I'm fortunate to have a pretty good hobby shop that stocks Tamiya paints and all varieties of model kits. Their train aisle isn't great, but they're a great source for tools, paints, and other supplies. Dave

I have two shots of the Greenville '60 in NKP colors, one as new and one from '77 it still has full height ladders, so that's what mine will be. Here's the builder shot It's a starting point for the ACF car as well, this is an older car, shaved the rivets, scribed the weld seams and changed the sill.

Working on getting this model up to speed using Kadee parts. Thankfully, I have ladder and grab iron jigs to assist in locating the new parts. Kadee side and end ladders, Kadee side and end grab irons, Kadee Miner brake housing and gear, a new etched metal running board, Archer Rivets and Tahoe Model Works round out the parts list. Further details on the Southern Railway cars can be reviewed here Southern Railway 30000-32018 PS-1 boxcars
