I am ordering some parts and could go either way. I'm still new to the detailing side, so I would appreciate anyone sharing their experiences and their preferences. Thanks in advance.

The only plastic ones I like are the Detail Associates stirrups and ExactRail stirrups. Otherwise for me metal is the way to go, whether the A-line parts or homemade.

I've used the Tichy because I could get them easily. No question metal is more durable, but when I break off a Ticky I can re-glue it just as fast when I first install it. I also hate drilling the holes for metal bits, so don't follow my example.

Tichy are made from plastic that's flexible and can't be glued, how do you do it?

I tend to use staples for replacement stirrups. But they bother me using them for side-mount stirrups. I’ve tried the Yarmouth model ones for the proto gondola but couldn’t figure out how to mount them.

I use A-Line, Tichy and staples depending on the car that I am modeling. Here is a photo of my redetailed Bowser/Stewart 14-panel hopper car that I installed Tichy stirrups. I like these better than the DA ones as they are easier to remove from the sprue, cheaper and a little more sturdier. I install the by first drilling a hole using a #76 drill bit which is almost a pressure fit for the strirrups. A tiny drop of CA holds them in place after installation.

I've got tons of hoppers that could use upgraded stirrups. The DA stirrups that are closest to this style can be hard to find, but the Tichy stirrups are widely available, so I'll give them a try.

Kind of curious why some use CA to mount things like stirrups that can be easily broken. I use canopy glue myself so if/when a stirrup is broken its generally pretty easy to remove the remains and install a replacement. No concerns about hazing either.

I very rarely have a broken stirrup and when I do the remains still can be removed. With the very small amount of CA that I use hazing is not a problem.

I don't have canopy cement but use Micro Krystal Klear on windows and such. Never saw a reason to use it on stirrups, and never had fogging trouble since I usually apply CA with a pin or wire. Also, I find that with the weaker joint that the Tichy stirrups make, the whole thing sproings off before it legitimately breaks. We'll see how well the fleet does after traveling to the STL RPM next month. Maybe I should just stop being lazy about drilling for metal parts?
