This is a factory painted Atlas car. Changes/ modifications include new trucks, brake wheel, couplers, wire stringers on the end cages and wire tow loops. The trucks are from Tahoe Model Works. Couplers and brake wheel are from Kadee. In order to use the Tahoe trucks, I had to rebuild the bolster pin. When I refer to the bolster pins, I am talking about the pins that come out of the bolsters that the trucks fit around and you put screws into them to hold the trucks in place. I also had to add a 0.030" washer to get the car to sit at the correct height for the couplers. I thought matching the paint was going to be a real chore. To my surprise though, it was not. I had a bottle of Mission Models MMW-05 Standard Rust. It was almost a perfect match. It was a smidgen to dark so I added not even a full drop of MMW-002 Light Rust 1. It has a little more orange tone to it and that made all the difference. Of course the model is in a gloss and the paint dries flat, but after applying a gloss coat to the entire model. The colors blended very well. After the gloss coat had cured, I shot the model with a satin varnish. The coal load is real crushed coal glued over a modified to fit commercial load. I used scenic cement to glue the coal in place. I first misted it with a water alcohol mix to remove the surface tension. Just a note. You may think that the ballast is fish tank sand. It is not. It is a mix of different ballasts from Arizona Rock and Mineral Products. I was experimenting with ballast mixes for RPM display stands. But since I do nto go to RPM meets anymore. I use them for photo stands.
