DSC04005 by wp8thsub, on Flickr SP 662351, from class B-70-26, series 662200-662399, built by ACF in 1965. The model is from Cannon kit 4003 (the related kit bundle is 5003-26). I used a Branchline non-overhanging roof, with a Moloco running board left over from one of their PC&F car kits.

Rob, very nice model. I like the subtle weathering. You captured the essence of SP box cars as I remember them.

This tank car is one of three rebuilt for WLCP's Caustic Soda service. It's very unusual because it has one flat end an the other is curved! I used a old Walthers 50' car kit that I shortened. I added wrap as was the prototype. I photographed and measured the car at our local NS yard. The next is a rear end detail photo of my UP BLI AC60CW that I highly modified and detailed. The knuckle holders are scratched.

Nothing too crazy this week, just doing a little test running on the portion of the helix I’ve completed. Five or six more levels to go! Helix progress by Christian Hostetler, on Flickr

I've still got a helix to build. Haven't settled yet on construction type.

I've still go a helix to build. Haven't settled yet on construction type. Only ramps for me! If I need a helix, I feel my decks would be too far apart, and therefore my layout too deep.

No matter the value of point-to-point operation, I hate not having a continuous-run option right now.

The closest I've come to building any models lately. I shortened this Athearn Freightliner and replaced the fuel tanks.

The helix for this layout was a necessity. It serves both as either end of the layout and also the center of it. At either "end" it allows a move from the east or west staging yards to either the upper or lower scenic deck, as well as moving trains in the "center" of the layout between upper and lower decks.

I've still got a helix to build. Haven't settled yet on construction type. I hadn't built a helix before this one, but i had a friend who introduced me to this method of using threaded rod. Its been pretty easy and I like the ability to adjust height if need be.

Its been pretty easy and I like the ability to adjust height if need be. On an older layout thirty plus years ago I built a helix. If I had to do it over again, I would use the threaded rod as well. There used to be a guy in Camarillo who had a five car garage with no cars, but lots of trains. He had a multideck layout and had outstanding an out standing helix that was constructed using threaded rods. I was told that was the only way to go. You never know down the road when you might have to adjust the the height at a particular location.

The rest of my layout is a ramp, but to to continuous running, railfanning, need a helix. Ooh...tough choice. No matter the value of point-to-point operation, I hate not having a continuous-run option right now. The club I belong to did a hybrid option, which I think is the best solution. With a full deck to deck helix, the trains just spend too much time in the helix and not in the scenery. But with ramps you are trying to deal with the second elevated track running around the whole layout between decks, and then there is the issue of "breaking through" the second deck that presents some issues. But by having the ramp around half the layout and then using a couple loops of helix to "break through" to the second deck, it goes a long ways to solving the issues with both methods.
